Esophageal gastro duodenoscopy. You'll be sedated and then a small scope will be passed through your esophagus to your stomach and to the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). The procedure is very quick and allows the doctor to look at the anatomy for any abnormalities prior to surgery. The report prepares the surgeon for any unforeseen issues before surgery so there are no surprises. Most doctors use a medication called Versed which is a sedative. It can have amnesia like qualities to it. It provides what is sometimes called "twilight sleep". You may be semi conscious but most likely won't remember a damn thing if you are. Most people don't have any residual pain. At most a little bit of a scratchy throat. I used to work in endoscopy so I've assisted in this procedure hundreds (if not thousands) of times. It's a fairly simple and quick procedure. You'll be up and out before you know it. I'll be having mine on Thursday!

I'll be asking for propofol & skip the Versed! At least with a small dose of that, you sleep for a few minutes...LOL

Propofol requires an anesthesiologist. Most insurance companies will not cover this and most GI doctors don't even offer the option. Propofol is a drug that requires serious monitoring. It is very easy for things to go very wrong if not used properly... ie Michael Jackson.

Propofol requires an anesthesiologist. Most insurance companies will not cover this and most GI doctors don't even offer the option. Propofol is a drug that requires serious monitoring. It is very easy for things to go very wrong if not used properly... ie Michael Jackson.

It requires oxygen supplementation, a pulse oximeter, and someone who knows not give CPR to someone laying on a soft surface. None of which, Michael Jackson had.

Seriously, propofol is dangerous when administered by someone who either doesn't know what they are doing, or doesn't care about keeping their patient safe. Some states allow advanced practice nurses to administer anesthesia without a MD present. I was given propofol for my EGD by a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist), which is an advanced practice nurse.

A lot of GI doctors don't offer it because you don't have to be a CRNA to give Versed. They use RNs for sedation, which is a lot cheaper.

That was my point. Somone qualified to administer anesthesia, which most G.I. docs are not. Most docs don't offer it because it's not typically covered by insurance, and really it's not typically necessary in most cases. Yes it comes down to money in most cases, but it also comes down to administering a medication that is way more powerful than needed for the procedure at hand. Kind of like using a shot gun to kill a mouse. Sedatives are the usual and customary practice for the procedure. The Michael Jackson reference was only to give as an example of what can go wrong in a tangable means that most people are conscious of.

Well, I've had 2 EGDs, one with only Versed, and it was horribly uncomfortable, not to mention I felt disoriented for several hours later. The other, with propofol administered by a CRNA and it was the "perfect anesthesia". Due to it's short acting properties, I woke up fully alert within minutes of going into the procedure. My total anesthesia cost after insurance paid: $38 bucks. In my opinion, well worth it.

Thanks for explaining the acronym! I had one of these years ago. I kept waking up and grabbing the equipment (to pull out) and I recall the dr cursing at me. He later apologized!!! What a bummer to have to repeat this experience!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?
