I have heard every lecture why I should quit blah blah blah...goes in one ear out the other!! I know it is bad for me and all...Now with the fast that is about to begin today not sure I can stop now....PLEASE DO NOT BE MEAN TO ME....I am emotional as it is!!!! :(

This is probably a silly question, but just to cover the bases, I'm asking anyway. Have you tried the nicotein Patches or gum? I know quitting smoking is just as hard (if not harder) than losing weight, and trying over and over just becomes more frustrating. Some people are successful with those treatments....others just have to stop cold turkey and walk away (as hard as it is) because trying to cut back only gives them the option to increase again. Maybe call your pshychologist and see if they have any suggestions that would help?

I know it's not easy (I'm a non-smoker, just have been around those who have had the struggle), but I wish you much luck.

I was a heavy smoker for 25+ years. But I knew I had to stop in order to get the surgery. So I used the Patches and at the same time, use an electronic cigg with 0%nicotine cartridge. That took care of my "hand to mouth" issue while I stepped down on the patches.I was on my last couple of days on my Patches when I had my surgery and my doc said I could have the patch in the hospital. But I didn't need any when I got home and have been fine ever since then (2/22/12). For me the biggest challenge was the "fear" of not having the next smoke. Seriously scared. But I will tell you what changed that for me. The book "Allen Carr's Easy Way to stop smoking".

http://www.amazon.com/Allen-Carrs-Easyway-Stop-Smoking/dp/0615482155/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1345462378&sr=1-1&keywords=allen+smoking

I guarantee you I would not have been as successful if I had not started with this book.

Have you tried Chantix? Worked wonders for my hub's chewing? Now that you're two weeks away I know that isn't the answer now but wondering if you ever tried it?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
