OK, I admit to weighing 100 pounds more than I weighed as a blushing bride in 1968. The 100 pounds bothers me but not nearly as much as the copious number of pills I take every day along with 45 units of lantus. Am I being realistic in expecting the diabetes to resolve itself with losing the 100 pounds and adding a reasonable exercise program? Can anyone say that it has worked out that way for them?

Wait, have you had WLS? Or just considering it?

I have seen MANY a successful story from SEVERAL diabetic WLS candidates. You CAN turn this around with sleeve. For me, I worked out for years and could never keep the weight off "for good." I don't have diabetes (yet) but had the surgery because I could see the road that I was going down.

And I was 110 lbs. overweight prior to surgery. About 15 lbs. left to go and I am doing 4-6+ miles a day (I am a workout fiend according to some, so... IDK if that's atypical or not).

Hey! You are pre-surgery and relatively close to my area (I'm in Carrollton). Baylor Plano has monthly support group meetings. I think it's second wed. of the month... if you can make it next time, hope you will come!

You CAN do this!

I’m type II also – and yes – it is possible. I’m @ the 2 year post stage and maintaining a loss of 85 – 90 lbs. Prior I was very close to going to the pump for my diabetes. In fact – that help push me to the sleeve. I was on metformin 1000 mg twice a day, Glucotrol 10 mg once a day, Lantus 45 and also – when needed a fast acting insulin. Now, I only use Victoza - 1 shot a day and I am averaging a reading of ~ 105. I eat what I want – in fact I really think if I stop all the sugar intake I could stop the Victoza. I have also stopped taking most of the other pills – like Zetia, Ramiprill, tetracycline. Like I said – it has been 2 years and life is great. My only regret, as many others have said – I should have had it done years ago … I just turned 61 when I had the operation.

Hope this helps

Your meds are very similar to mine. When I heard myself described as a brittle diabetic it was a huge wake up call. The pump was the next option for me and I did not want to go there. I think I pop a pill or two for every "lifestyle" condition there is: blood pressure, etc. Unfortunately I have glucose brain this morning and I can not begin to attempt to spell the many others.

If your speaking of having WLS I definitely think you can reverse it. However reversing diabetes without WLS is a gamble but still possible it just has a lower probability. There are several studies on this you should google it.

Now, I was diagnosed with the dreadful diabetes in June of 2011. I too was on 45 units of lantus and 20-25 units of humalog or Apidra before every meal. After a few months I quit taking the humalog Bc the lantus was working fine. So when I found out WLS could reverse diabetes I was all in. In fact, I had never considered having WLS until I was diagnosed with diabetes. I was so depressed and never wanted that disease to me it was a death sentence. I couldn't take it. So without even really thinking it through I had the sleeve done on July 17th. I went to one info session and I remembered holding back tears when the dr said diabetes would be eliminated. To make a long story short... July 16, 2012 was thee LAST day of me taking any diabetes medications. Praise God! Every once in a while I check my bgl. They tend to be in the 75-89 range. So I am super happy with my decision. The sleeve can reverse your situation. Some people don't completely come off their medications for a few weeks-months post op. But prayerfully you too will be able to come off those insulins shortly after your sleeve! Good luck to you~!!!

I'm almost 9 weeks post op. My doctor took me off of my Metformin several days before my surgery & told me to stay off post-op...good luck!

Last August my sugar level was 210! Type 2, this scared me! I was put on janumet, day of surgery, 7/17/12 it was 154, 3 weeks after surgery, 95!!! No more pills! Also my cholesterol, high blood pressure pills are a thing of the past, didn't expect it to be so short of time though, I'm very very happy!

Had surgery on Aug. 14th, had insulin day of surgery and next day. On the 16th I am no longer taking the 2000 mg of metformin or the 10mg of glyburide. I had this surgery to get off of meds and I am so grateful that the surgery has surpassed all my expections. I wish you all the luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
