Help Sought Understanding Protein Absorption

Recommended Posts

Hello

Since the surgery I have become lactose intolerant. And since I worked this out I have stopped taking Protein Shakes. I am in a stall and often at a loss for what to eat easily and want to get back on the shakes.

However, I am aware that a lot of the lactose free Protein Shakes on the market contain protein which is not easily absorbed or beneficial. I have been looking at soy, pea, and egg white protein powders.

Does anyone know what I should be looking for or what I should avoid?

Most threads on here discussing protein powders refer to brands which are no good to me as I live in New Zealand and do not have access to the same brands. So I am looking to understand types of protein rather than specific brand recommendations.

Thank you!

Louise

Do you have a nutrition store in or near the town you live? There are many Protein powders out there you can mix with water/soy/almond milk. I would drop by there and find a whey Protein Powder.< /p>

Look at the ingredients on the mix.

Whey Protein isolate is the best Protein you can get. And by isolating the protien they remove all lactose from the mix.

But make sure whey protien isolate is the only source of protein in your mix

Most mixes will also contain whey protien concentrate, milk protien, Calcium cassinate, or other milk derived Proteins that are not lactose free

Both unjury & Syntrax nectar use pure whey protein isolate.

Another option for protein that that is that has a full ammino acid structure is Hemp protein. Hemp is the only plant based protein that has all ammino acids.

You could assemble a variety of plant Proteins to get all the ammino acids, but that's too much work for me to mess with.

To be honest, those nutrition shops intimidate me a little. Actually, a lot But I am going to suck it up and go talk to them. I have visions of bulky weight lifter types working there looking at me wondering why a middle aged fat lady is in their store. Which I know is ridiculous. I have money I am willing to give them in exchange for their products so surely it can't be that hard......

This is my mission for today!

The Vitamin Shoppe is much more geared toward the average person being healthy. GNC is more geared toward meatheads, but they are doing a lot more daily living stuff than they use to.

Just remember to check the ingredients. I know most pure Whey protien isolates will be labeled "lactose free".

We don't have either of those shops here. I live in a country where all beef is grass fed and organic or free range is easily accessible. What is not so accessible is highly processed foods like Protein powders. The local nutrition store I went to today said I would struggle to find a true lactose free whey isolate, which was disappointing.

I have never seen either of those brands for sale here.

Unjury is only available online. Syntrax is available online and in some stores.

Try ordering it on-line. Unjury has a site and I ordered my Protein from them.

unjury don't ship to New Zealand.

It looks like syntax may be able to be shipped though.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
