Luser Name 0 Posted August 16, 2012 wondering how many pounds you lost with a sleeve? I am trying to decide between a sleeve and RNY. Doc says 70 to 80 with a sleeve, well over 100 with an RNY. Would love to heat other's experience. M

PdxMan 4,292 Posted August 16, 2012 It really depends on where you start, but I have seen many people, myself included, lose 100% of their excess weight. I think it depends on how much excess weight you have and for how long you are able to maintain strict compliance with the lifestyle. Whether it is sleeve or bypass, someone 4 months out can do an awful lot of damage to a tub if ice cream ... and their weightloss. 2 Queengamez and clk reacted to this
deltadawn817 106 Posted August 16, 2012 I am 5 months post op and down 70lbs. I was told my goal from the Nut at the Dr's office. and that is 174 but I have my own person goal and it is less than that because I am only 5'3" 1 dobrien03 reacted to this
Bubbaloo10 55 Posted August 16, 2012 I'm 4 months out today and I've lost 83 lbs, 20 more to go to 180. There are a few factors you need to know: 1. The more you have to lose, the faster it will come off. 2. You've got to stick with the program and get lots of exercise. The exercise is the least of it. It gets easier as you get lighter. I went in looking for an RNY and my doc steered me toward the sleeve due to the fact that I only had two co-morbidities: sleep apnea and knee joints breaking down. My BMI was about 41.3 if I remember right. See my pix if you need motivation. Good luck. 1 dobrien03 reacted to this
SpecialK1960 252 Posted August 16, 2012 I never heard 70 pounds. It would be different for each person. A person 200 over would be greatly disappointed with a 70 pound weight loss, but a person just 100 over, might be okay with it. I have heard 70% of excess weight or more with the sleeve. That is not the same as pounds at all. I think a percentage is a much more accurate guage of potential weight loss and a better way to compare the surgeries. But it is different for everybody. A huge amount of your total weight loss will be completely up to you. So much has to do with the amount of effort you put in during that critical first year. Lifestyle changes and excercise are going to be the real key to your final weight loss numbers. Both surgeries are tools for weight loss, we still have to do all the work. Mr_Worm 129 Posted August 16, 2012 You can lose as much as you want with the sleeve if you work it right. I lost 130 pounds in under 6 months with the sleeve, no carb diet, and hired a personal trainer. I got that with no re-routing of things 2 dobrien03 and Slenderella reacted to this
Jack Fabulous 35 Posted August 16, 2012 It really depends on how overweight you are. I've lost 85 lbs so far at 6 months out and I have another 80 to go. I feel confident that I will get there. It just takes time. My doctor told me I should have no problem losing 130 - 150 lbs.

clk 3,519 Posted August 17, 2012 There's nothing to stop you from losing well over 100 pounds with the sleeve and I've seen posters here that have done that. I lost 107 pounds. Unlike a bypass, you do not have a perfect window of opportunity where you have the best malabsorption and an unstretched pouch - your sleeve remains the same from roughly one year onward. There is absolutely NO reason you cannot continue to lose weight until you've lost 100% of your excess weight if you adhere to a healthy diet. If you have less than 150 pounds to lose, I'd very carefully weigh the pros and cons of bypass vs. sleeve, particularly a blind stomach, stretchable pouch and a lifetime of supplements due to nutrient malabsorption. That said, every single person here chose the sleeve - so we're all biased and feel we made the correct choice! ~Cheri

PdxMan 4,292 Posted August 17, 2012 I think any way you look at it, >150 to lose or < 150, the sleeve is the best choice. If, after awhile post sleeve, you feel you are not able to follow the rules of the sleeve and want to go the malabsorption route, you can have a switch or RNY. But for me, one year out, I still have excellent restriction and know beyond a doubt that if I had another 100 to lose, the sleeve would help me be successful. And all my plumbing is right where it's supposed to be and my pyloric valve functions as God meant it to.
