Getting That Vitamin Down

Recommended Posts

I seem to be having a HUGE problem swallowing my Vitamin without feeling like I'm about to throw it back up. Are there any other options out there? How do you guys handle it?

Now, let me say that I was just released to soft foods yesterday so there still may be some swelling in there and that may be part of my problem. I just know I need to get it in and I'm having a hard time. Thanks!

You're taking a Vitamin that isn't chewable? ? My surgeon would have a stroke if I told him I was taking a non-chewable vitamin! I would recommend switching to a chewable...Flintstones Complete works great...or contact your surgeon/nutritionist to get their recommendation.

OMG Yes! I can't believe your swallowing a big ol Vitamin. Sheesh. I take gummy vitamins. I thought I would have issues in the beginning with swallowing the Gummy but I didn't. I would definitely recommend that you switch to gummy or chewable vitamins. Just chew chew chew before you swallow!

Just as an FYI...."gummy" Vitamins are not allowed by my program. Definitely check with your program before buying those instead of chewables.< /p>

I use Centrum chewables and just nibble it a little at a time - they are orange flavored and kind of like a little treat in the morning and at night. I was told chewable for 1 month but think I will stick with chewable for awhile. Vitamins tend to make me feel nauseous even pre-op. I have to have something on my stomach before chewing it up.

Good luck with finding something that will work for you!

Hmmmmm ... interesting ...

Different strokes for different doctors I guess. I WAS on chewables (Bariatric Advantage) initially but they made me so nauseated that I wasn't able to get in my fluids. At 3 weeks, my doctor switched me to a capsule (Celebrate) and it's been smooth sailing ever since.

But, regarding pill swallowing in general - he had me doing it in the hospital!! There was never any restriction whatsoever about pill swallowing & I've never had any trouble doing it.

My main concern is that you be sure to take a BARIATRIC Vitamin. That is super important to your overall health. But there are lots of options out there - just have a heart to heart with your doctor regarding which ones are good options for YOU ; )

Good luck!

They are a no no on my plan too. They recommend the Bariatric fusion Vitamins since it has everything you need and do not need to take multiples. I haven't tried them yet as I'm still pre op

Well, called my NUT several hours ago and still haven't heard back. I went to the store and got some liquid Calcium (2 Tbsp=1000 mg) and I got some Viactiv chews (1 chew=500 mg). I think that'll cover it. I also found the Centrum chewable. This should SO help.

I asked my pharmacist to get me a liquid multi Vitamin with Biotin and he was able to locate it for me.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
