Here I Am...i Am Ready

Recommended Posts

So, 3 years ago I started the process to get the WLS. It was a 6 month process at Fort Sam- sleep studies, nutrition, psych, drs, etc. I got 5.5 months into the process and found out we were expecting O.o horrible.

fast forward to July 19, 2012. I started the process here in El Paso. thought i would have another 6 month process- NOT, they like to get things done around here! I had my initial appt, nutrition appt, lab work and support group in the same day. Psych appt within a week and final preop surgeon appt 2 weeks later! they scheduled my surgery for 5 days and a wake up later.

I have been thinking about this for 3 years and it was nice to get through the pre op stuff quickly when i have waited this long. I think it REALLY set in that i HAD to do something when i was at the psych office (they specialize in bariatric patients) and i saw on my chart "morbid obesity" in big bold lettering. it REALLY hurt and scared me. REALLY. "morbid", such a strong and negative word. but it was the push i needed.

i began my preop diet on my own july 19th. i wanted to get a feel for all of this- shakes, Water and one well balanced low carb meal (no more white carbs, no pastas, no rice etc) a day. working out and busting my butt at work. its been an eye opener. i have realized i have so much more energy eating cleaner, i have more time in the day to do the things i want and need to do- even adding a new job and some extra responsibilities!

monday, 4 days and a wake up and i will be starting my new life. i am ready to be back to where i was 7 years ago. our family is complete, my husband has his job and degrees, its MY turn to fix myself and do what i want to do for ME. the boxes and boxes and boxes of smaller clothing in my garage are calling to me

are you keeping busy? are you working out at all? if you are bored, you will feel hungry when you reay arent. i have been doing the "pre-op" diet for almost a month now, so my body has adjusted. your bdy may still be in shock and just want food but not need it. give it some time. my surgeon said that the adjustment can and probably will take 3 months. the energy level, the pain and whatnot, and the diet changes may need 3 months to level off.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
