My Pre Op Assessment Today

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, hope you are all well.

I saw my Surgeon today and then went for my pre assessment with the Nurse.

There might be a problem with me having the surgery next Tuesday :(

Im anaemic and they wont do anything if im too low.

Also I suffered a dog bite to my finger last Wednesday and its a pretty nasty one and they are worried about Infection, even though im on AB's they took a swab and if it show's I have an Infection they wont operate.

Im worried.

Linda

did they do more bloodwork, or were you anemic prior and they re-tested? I hate all these 'last minute' tests that can defer surgery dates....I hope you are able to bring up your Iron prior to your surgery - did they say when they would test you again??

Yes they did more blood tests and yes I was Anaemic before (have been for a while)

Infact when I had my bloods done at my GP surgery they couldnt measure my HBA1C (for Diabetes) as there wasnt enough red blood cells to measure.

But the Surgeon knew this beforehand.

Ive been having tests at my GP surgery to find out why but as of yet nothing is showing up.

The Hospital will ring me if there's a problem or Infection :( Im hoping to not receive the call.

Oh my....first I hope you will be OK for surgery - as Im not clear on how being anemic effects the surgery and such. So are they saying they do not know what is causing you to be anemic? Yikes - that's a bit scary...I hope everything works out for you. sending good vibes your way.....

Thank you

It could mean I need a blood transfusion but also makes healing difficult.

It also means im losing blood somewhere and as of yet they have not found where :(

Dependant on certain investigations I may need a Gastroscopy or Colonoscopy.

As long as I dont receive a call from the Hospital in the next few days Surgery is planned for Tuesday still.

I have to go there early to have my bloods done again just to check and if bloods acceptable I'll be admitted in HDU x

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
