Help Me Move Past This Weight Plateau !

Recommended Posts

I am 2.5 months post op and STUCK in a weigh range between 320 - 321. My diet is a mix of tuna, eggs, Beans, fruit. Low Sodium V-8 juice and 2 Chike brand Protein Shakes per day. (BTW, has anyone tired this brand, it is GREAT tasting) My weekly workout routine when I can fit it in consist of cardio 30 mins, resistance training 3days and lap swimming 2 days. Any one have suggestions how to move past this plateau? Please email me at kvbinns@gmail.com

Hi Celaine,

I received a reply advising me to go back to a full liquid diet for 3 to 4 days which should include Protein shakes. What do you think? I am going to try it for a while and see what happens.

How long have you been "stuck" at this weight? Stalls are completely normal. Do you know your daily caloric intake? Chances are that your body is just adjustng to the weight already lost, and you will start losing again soon.

BTW, be careful with the Chike, it is good, but it is not a Protein supplement. It is a high protien Meal Replacement. It has more calories than your protien supplements do.

I have been stuck at 181 for about 2 weeks, give or take a few pounds, I will go to 181, then back to 184, then back to 181.....I am drinking about 74 grams of Protein, (Oh Yeah! shakes and EAS shakes) and about 50-60 oz of Water, my daily calorie intake is about 1000. Walking for 45 minutes every other day.....

Firstly, why are you drinking your Protein? Are you still on full liquids at 8 weeks post op? If not you should be eating your protein. 1000 calories seems like a lot for someone who is only 180 lbs and only 8 weeks out. Is that what your Dr. recommended at this stage for you? Your NUT? I was told to eat 1000-1200 at that point but I'm 6'1" male with a very physically demanding job, and over 300 lbs.

Also, your Water intake seems too low and you're not exercising enough. Start walking (or doing something else) everyday and up your water. If you can drink all those Protein Shakes you should be able to drink 80-90 oz of water a day. I think with more exercise and more water you will easily break your stall.

My NUT told me that I need to keep my calories around 1000 per day, but to eat about 5 meals per day....I dont always do it because sometimes Im just not hungry....and I only continue to drink my Protein because I want to make sure that my hair doesnt start shedding. Is it possible to get too much protein? I drink the protein in the mornings... I agree that I need to do better with the Water, that is something that I have struggled with from day one.

I'm no expert on hair, but I don't think it will matter to your hair whether you are eating or drinking your Protein. It happens to a lot of patients, but to different degrees. Lack of protein will make it worse they say. But solid or Liquid Protein won't matter. Of course I shave my head so I don't know much about hair.

Well I am definitely going to increase my Water, and add something else to my excercise regimen, I can tell that I have lost inches, but I like to see the scale actually move! Hopefully that will get the ball rolling in the right direction! Thanks so much for your input, greatly appreciate it!

Don't panic guys, I had my sleeve done on the 10th May 2012 & have lost 30kg, you best get use to these plateaus because they happen often! The longest plateau I had was 4weeks & it drove me insane! Stick with it because before you know it 1 morning you'll suddenly start seeing the weight move again. The 1 thing I notice that even though my weight doesn't move during those times my size however does so be guided buy your pants.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
