Here's some pre-op advice:

Have a few comfy sundresses/etc postop. Do have camis, sports bra to wear due to the placement of your incisions. Get some really small (1oz, 2-3oz, 4oz) food containers, it will help cut down on wasted food. Start looking for pureed/mushy recipes now. Get samples of Protein powders, etc. Now! Don't purchase large amounts of anything right now. Do have the Fluid items ready once you come home. Your fluids will be the most important thing when you get home. I had a cooler in my room to keep a variety of beverages cold. Remember, your taste buds can change on you post op, don't be surprised. Have some Crystal Light/Mio for your Water, just in case plain water isn't agreeing with you. Fluids, fluids, and more fluids!!! Above all, don't compare your recovery to anyone else's! The first few days/week might be rough or could be smooth sailing! If you have any questions, come here and ask. No question is silly or stupid, and has probably been asked and answered! Do a search!!! That's all I can think of for now. Pre-oper's you'll do fine! Any questions, you've got a big community here of support.

U can get the 1 oz plastic med cups from any pharmacy. The hospital will also give u a few to bring home. As for small food containers, I got mine at the supermarket. Dr. Hoffman doesn't want you driving for 10 days. Oh yeah, no red Jello or crystal light/drink mix!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
