Spontaneous Vomiting, No Relation To Oral Intake

Recommended Posts

I am 6 days post-op today, still on clear liquid diet and won't be promoted to mushies until this Wednesday.

Just a few minutes ago, I was laying on the couch talking on the phone feeling absolutely great when out of nowhere I felt what seemed like strong spams in my stomach and esophagus. They were painful, though this time not radiating to my back like previous "gas pains". I wasn't nauseated at all, but I just started dry-heaving and gagging involuntarily...just like someone would sneeze involuntarily, I was dry-heaving like it was out of nowhere. I had nothing in my stomach since the last time I sipped was an hour ago, so all that came out was sputum from my mouth. I have never had problems with acid reflux, so I'm not on a PPI. I didn't even vomit stomach acid.

It lasted a good 3 to 5 minutes, and seemed more like a neurogenic response than a gastric response. Who knows, maybe it was just gas? I feel fine now, just a little sore in my stomach like anyone would be. I'll be bringing this up to my doctor on Wednesday.

Has anyone experienced this before? Or have a guess at what this could be? What was the treatment?

Thanks for any input!

It could be your gallbladder, which is very common with WLS. If this continues, you should contact the doctor. They can quickly diagnose this with an ultrasound.

I had my gallbladder out years before WLS - but I had these episodes of incredible pain and spasms which radiated, they also made me heave, even though I had nothing in my stomach to speak of. I had to double over in pain at times and wait for the episode to pass.

If this keeps reoccuring call your surgeon, it could be something else as well, and better to be safe than sorry.

Good luck.

I’ve had that talking a lot dry mouthed just gag a bit then it turns to dry heaving, wake up dry mouth gag start dry heaving.

For me it was nothing soon as I sipped on a drink I was fine, if your worried call the nurse and ask her if they are worried they will have you come in and be looked out.

It doesn't matter if you did or didn't have an issue with reflux before surgery. I suggest you start with a PPI. 2nd you could have drank too fast your tiny tummy will take a little while to catch up I know in the fist month I could do NOTHING while drinking/eating I had to really pay attention to how much I was having, how fast, and how many times I chewed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
