SkinnyJeans 5 Posted August 11, 2012 I am scheduled for my sleeve on 9/7. I've been reading a lot about people having heartburn/acid reflux post-op. I've never had heartburn/acid reflux before and I'm worried about getting it. For those who have never had it before, and got it post-op, did it eventually go away or is this something that we will live with forever? This is a big concern for me because my Mom has suffered many years from terrible heartburn/acid reflux (stemming from ulcers) and I've seen her suffer over the years. I just don't want to take medication for the rest of my life and have to go through the struggles I've seen my Mom go through. Also, because most of our stomach is taken out, I'm wondering what kind of long term effect this could have on us? Your insights are much appreciated! Futureskinnyperson 29 Posted August 11, 2012 Hi! I am almost 6 weeks out now and I had never had heartburn before the surgery. I had terrible heartburn for a few days after I started taking full fluids. I did not want to have it so I started taking omeprazole and it went away almost immediately. I took it for about 2-3 weeks and have not taken it for about a week and so far no problem. I think if you have trouble just take some over the counter medication like omeprazole (ask your doc what they recommend as there are many different kinds out there) and then see if it comes back when you stop. If it doesn't then you are good to go without it! Good luck!
