Drain Insertion Site Healing Or Not?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. Im day 6 post op and its been 4 days since the drain removal. I have steristrips on top of the site. They told me thered be a little leakage but that it should heal after a day after the removal of the drain. But the steristrip half came off and its a tiny miniscule open and wet. What should i do?

Put some gauze over it and change it 2x/day. I didn't have any steristrips, just cleaned and dressed it for another week or so until it stopped leaking. Then I switched to bandaids when I was sleeping to keep it from rubbing, and let it air out the rest of the day under my tshirt since it wasn't leaking, just a little red and scabby.

You think i should clean it with hydrogen peroxide before putting new guaze?

I would talk to your Dr before using peroxide. Most of the Doctors I have worked with do not like having wounds cleaned with peroxide because it can be hard on the new tissue that is forming.

I would not use peroxide. Joy4theJourney is correct, it is very hard on delicate new tissue. Call your surgeon's office to get their advice.

Ok guys i searched online for open wound care. Youre right. No hydrogen peroxide. Just soap and Water than air to dry and then gauze or bandaid:) phew! Thanks for all your input! Saved me $2 too! Haha

My surgeon said not to use a band-aid because they hold in moisture. He said to use soap, Water, and a clean gauze pad until it stops leaking--then open to air is fine.
