Presurgery diet question

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled to have my operation on October 11th. My surgens requirement for pre-surgery diet is fasting for 12 hours before the surgery, and that's it... I know other surgens have much more restrictive presurgery diets. I'd like to know what you were required to do.

Thanks

That is my surgeons only requirement for me- BUT had I been what he calls supersize bander 300+, I would have the preop liquid diet and wt loss requirement. So for that Im thankful Im just MO not superMO.

Good Luck!

As I was getting close to my surgery date, many other dr.'s had people on an all liquid diet for 2 weeks. geeesh!

All I had to do was eat low carb, have no red meat 48 hours before surgery and fast 12 hours before surgery.

I tried my own self imposed version of the liquid diet and failed miserably. I did manage to have only liquids 24 hours prior even though it wasn't a requirement. I ended up losing 12 pounds in 3 weeks. I was pretty happy with that.

Supposedly, nothing in the stomach and bowel tract greatly decreases your discomfort after surgery. I adopted that theory and had minimul complications and minimul gas.

My doctor had me on the physician's weight loss center liquid diet for 17 days prior to my surgery. It wasn't easy, but I lost a lot of weight during the process, and the ends certainly justified the means.

There was no preop diet for me either, just nothing after midnight, prior to surgery. I loved that part. You have to do enough liquids after surgery. He did say I had some fat on my liver. LOL I could have told him that, there is fat everywhere else.

Hi,

How exciting your surgery is coming up in October. I just had mine five days ago and I'm amazed at how quickly I recovered and how well I feel (even better than before surgery).

My doctor had me on liquids -- Water, broth, clear juices, etc) the day before surgery and then nothing after 11 pm. I was scheduled for surgery at 7:30 the following morning. Doctors have different ways of doing things, I just think it's best to follow your own orders to a t!

Good luck with everything.

Thanks to everyone who responded tomy question. I certainly got enough information. Another question to the group has anybody tried the Master Cleanser before surgery, it consists of drinking a liter of salty Water ( prepared to the secific gravity of human blood). After your bowel has empitied you follow up with a lemonade made with lemon juice sweetened with B grade maple Syrup and cayenne pepper. You can have as much of the lemonade as you wish for as long as you feel you need to cleanse your system. I tried it before abdominal surgery(complete histectomy and ovaries removed) and my doctor commented that I had emptied my bowels very well and that had made his job easier. It made my recovery faster. Anyone else has experienced this?

I am going for my surgery on the 24th October, pertrified and excited all at once.

The surgeon told me I would have to eat plain yoghurt for 7 days before the op! I told him I couldn't stand yoghurt so he allowed me to have slimfast instead.

The reason for the diet is was that the left lobe of the liver tends to be enlarged in obese patients and the diet makes sure the liver is not blocking access to the stomach.

I can;t say I am looking forward to those seven days at all. But, needs must if I finally want to crack the weight problem!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
