Weight Loss And Anxiety Before Surgery

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced difficulty losing weight before surgery?

My doctor hasn't specified a specific amount of weight he'd like me to lose, just told me that I can not gain. I have to attend a 12 week program (having surgery @ mayo Clinic, and have Mayo insurance as well) and have just completed week 7.

So far, my weight has stayed exactly the same. Not even a 0.01 change in pounds. I'm frustrated because I'm watching what I eat and I'm getting in activity.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Part of me wonders if I'm subconsciously sabotaging myself? I get kind of scared sometimes of what life will be like when (if) I have the surgery...and notice I've been feeling a little anxious--not sure exactly why though.

I lost 17 pounds in the 6 month supervised nutrition meetings. Since then, not an ounce. I am sure I will lose more once I am on the liquid diet. But it is frustrating to eat way less, watch carbs and the scale doesn't move.

Watching what you eat probably brought you to the level you need to maintain your weight. While slightly disappointing, not gaining is the first steps to success for many people.

I have only lost 13 pounds during my 12 week class and since then, but I have not gained and that is the goal. During our class is was suggested per the surgeon that we lose 10% of our weight before surgery. I has been difficult for me too, it's not an easy thing at all. Wish you the best!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
