how far out in preop are you? Ive only heard smoking can be bad becuz it can hinder your healing process and cause clots. I say if you are over 6weeks you should be safe. I feel your pain I love my cocktails and counting down the days until i can enjoy one finally

i am 6 weeks out this week.

no, please no.. smoking is not good for you period with or without sleeve.. its just bad doesn't help in anyway.. if you need a release turn to something else.. i found it very helpful to go out with good friends catch a movie a show ... just keep busy distract yourself with other things don't turn to smoking.. some ideas.. photo albums scrapbooking photography arts n krafts just anything you enjoy.. good luck..

No! Don't sabotage yourself. You're situational suffering is temporary. Smoking is not going to help you feel or be stronger. If anything, there are greater risks of further complicating your recovery and life. Try to find better coping that will leave you feeling powerful. Make something gor someone you live. Don't smoke. You don't need anything more to work through.

I still smoke my doc knows all about it we talked about it before the op he had no issue with me quitting so yes I still smoke.

As for you I would say no don’t!

Honestly if you haven’t for this long just don’t I know the urge to just find the comfort in the vice of smoking but it won’t be just one we both know that!

yes i do still smoke so you might think oh its easy for me to say don;t but i kinda wish i was made to give up and i will be working on that very soon!

Trust me I know how you feel I still don’t keep things down well can’t drink a lot or eat nearly as much as I am told too and I had the worst experience of my life for a whole week not being able to go.

I almost went er I was taking all sorts to help me go and when I finally did spent the whole next day in bed in pain.

Now I drink half a cup of prune juice every day over ice to help.

in my food log in the top corner I keep a note of going like bm lbm bbm which stands for bowel movement little and big so I know when I am going when I am not it can be 3 days of nothing then 2 or 3 days of movement.

I can hit you up with what I did but its way way too much info for this thread lol

its easy to fall back on but please don't you will feel crap after for going so long without then doing it again.

No. Cigarettes will hurt you in the long run, but you know that. Please find another way to deal with your feelings. I smoked for twenty-two years, so I know.

If your therapist is not helpful for your issues, please find another one. The American Psychological Association website can steer you to someone in your area.

So, you've been 6 weeks, maybe more, without a cigarette? What an amazing accomplishment! Although you're going through a rough time, you've got to be excited about that! I'm not a smoker, never have been, but I'm glad you've made so many great changes in your life. Do your best! I know you can do it! Good Luck!

NO......and I am sure you know that all to well by the way you asked......but don't feel bad because you want to. You are giving up one crutch (eating) and it is normal to want to grasp for another one. Is there a support group you can go to? I am not so much impressed with therapists who haven't been there, but a support group that has is a whole different story. I have survived on books and movies--they are a good distraction. Find yours--and reach out on this board often. Maybe answer some questions for others and that could help you? Dang I know this is hard.

I'd say no. As far as a release if exercise is not an option, how about sex??? Just a thought.

THank you for the advice and the private messages. SO tired of thinking of a way to get through this. So, I'll think more about it tomorrow. Thank you again. Wish you all lived near me. :)

No, but only because you'll probably really regret it and then be depressed about that. Think of it as the one thing you DO have control over. If for no other reason than tomorrow you can come back and brag to us how strong you were!

I dont smoke & certainly am not going to judge. Honestly, how cld anyone on here? We've all had an eating prob or we wouldnt hv had the surgery. Your ID, says a lot & very encouraging. I hope you dont mind me suggesting something to you. You may think its silly but writting encouraging notes (the opposite of what u r feeling & posting them thru your house & reading them all thru the day can help boost ya. Just a thought. Hope you get to feeling better.

Have you tried e-cigs? They make them with and without nicotine in a variety of flavors. You can get a hit of nicotine, and see the Water vapor "smoke" coming out of your mouth. Many people find it a satisfying half-way point between smoking tobacco and going cold turkey.

I quit a year and a half before I got my VSG, but I can only imagine how difficult it must be. Lots of people deal with depression after the surgery, and it doesn't make it easier that you're craving a cigarette, and dealing with Constipation too. People don't realize that smoking stimulates the bowels so not smoking can leave you blocked up, and surgery and pain medicine has been known to cause constipation too.

I hope you get to feeling better very soon. Do look into e-cigs. They're a reasonable alternative to tobacco for someone who doesn't want to wholly quit.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
