Cleared For "real Food"... Now What?

Recommended Posts

Ok, friends I just got the great news that I'm cleared to start eating "real food" again! Yay, yay, yay! *happy dance* But, I have no idea what I want to eat or where to start with. I know I want to ease into eating things just as I have through this whole process, but I'm not sure where to begin, and its a week until I get to see my NUT. I really don't have a craving for anything particular, and I want to hang on to that feeling as I start eating healthy solid food again. But, whats a good first meal?

I've been eating cheeses, and egg salad, Peanut Butter and other soft foods for a bit now, so I'm past that place.

Suggestions! And one more time, yay!

Hi! I would try chicken (thighs or breast - just make sure to dip the breast in something to moisten it up a bit), salmon (and other fish), shrimp and lean ground turkey. :)

chicken or a roast in a slow cooker? Makes the meat so moist and easy to chew! That is going to me in a week also....I'm really not "craving" anything either...potroast sounds good to me though..yummm...good luck!

You'll make it! And for me, once I got on mushies everything got better. I didn't miss eating as much, and could have something other than sweet Protein drinks all the time.

I start this Thursday. I'am going to try and eat like I did before....clean ....just more calories. Protein first then veggies and fruit then carbs. I know I'll have a little somethin, somethin from time to time, but I don't want to undo everything I just went through.

I was told this BUT can do ground beef now....so I have plenty of burgers!! I live alone and there are nights I will go to Wendy's, get a cheeseburger with mustard, remove the bun, and eat!

I'm lucky in this department, I'm not a beef fan. Before I only ate poultry and some fish (but I'm super picky with fish, really not a seafood fan).

Yeah I'm real picky about seafood too. Beef, even though I miss having a hamburger, it's just not worth it to have right now. The Doctors said that it's very hard to digest and that's why they want us to wait. I know it's healthier not have too.

I think where I am strugglng since I'm fresh into eating again, is all the substituions I know of for carbs, generally invovle raw veggies and I'm still intimidated to try those. So far I've only have some turkey and chicken. Normally, I'm really good at food stuffs... but I'm feeling lost in the trying to learn how to eat balenced in the beginning. Otherwise, I'm eating the same foods I've been eating on mushies, just not as mushy. Last night dinner was, fat free refried Beans, a little melted cheese, half a 100 cal wholly guacamole, and a squirt of taco bell's mild sauce (my boyfriend stole some packets for me hehe).

I knew exactly what I wanted as my first solid, real food and that was crab legs. They are my very favorite thing, so thats what I had. Thankfully they are also really easy to eat.

Pick something high in protein!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
