Finally Approved! (With Cigna)

Recommended Posts

Wow... After 2 months of having my initial paperwork faxed, 2 denials, and on the 1st Appeal, I was Approved on August 1st. YAY :D !! Im so Happy, and relieved that this saga is over... God is really Good!! This whole insurance process has been very daunting, exhausting, and down right aggrivating, but through all of this this Ive learned some valuable lessons, and I plan to write a separate post on that soon. I have not recieved my letter as of yet, but the rep stated that it was mailed out, and I should get it this week. I will call my surgeons office tomorrow morning to figure out our next step... hopefully to schedule a date real soon-- maybe a August sleever ????

Congratulations! I got denied twice with Cigna too. They are really frustrating to work with. I am glad you persisted. Fingers crossed you get an August date!

Thanks so much! I know I have so many new things ahead (Liquid diet, post-op,) so jumping this hurdle was wonderful! KZBen-- Are you local (Central FL?) I first thought about doing to Dr Kim to be my surgeon, but decided on Dr Jawad.

Little Miss, I live in Orlando. I am going with Dr. Kim. I love the staff in his office; just waiting now for my approval.

Congrats! I've been denied once by Cigna, so I understand the frustration.

Now I've had to switch surgeons as my first one quit unexpectedly, so everything has to be filed ALL over again. Hopefully I'll get an approval this time. :)

Any thoughts or information on the appeal process would be greatly appreciated. I am so frustrated as I have already benn jumping through hoops for 6 months!!!!

Hi Mendif-

As you know, Cigna is very tricky.... I would call them around 2 weeks after everything is submitted. My appeal was submitted on 7/20/12 and approved on 8/1/12. They will tell you it wil be 4-6 weeks, but it doesnt hurt to call or follow up on the process. Also make sure you have your bariatirc qualifications (psych eval , medical neccesity AND Clearance for surgery, etc). It helped me to have a check list to make sure ALL paperwork was submitted. You can write additional reasons, but if you meet qualifications, and all the required paperwork is in place according to Cignas poilcy, you're in!! Praying for a speedy appeals process :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
