Pb's and Vomiting

Recommended Posts

Hello, I was banded on May22nd started out at 215 now I am 188. I am very pleased with my weight lose. I have had 2 fills. 1.5 each time. So I have a 10cc band 3cc full. Anyhow, I have a problem , just about every time I eat I through it back up. Its not like it comes from my stomach though, its like sitting in my esophugus, at least thats how it feels. I start out with major chest pain then once I get sick I feel a whole lot better. I work in a hospital and have been told this is not normal to get some saline taken out but see before the fills I was loosing nothing, now I am so happy its coming down. I told my surgeon he said he thinks I am tring to eat to much and to fast to big of bites. I don't really no cause not a day goes by that I don't get sick. My omd put my on asiphex to protect my throat but I notice no diffrence. I was just wondering if anyone is exsperiencing the same thing.

Thanks for listening!!

Hey Cherg,

I agree with whoever is telling you that some saline needs to come out. The band wasnt designed for us to lose weight by pbing everything we eat. Just a little bitty tiny amount may make a BIG difference. You certainly dont want to get malnutricianed!.

Good luck.

You really should consider a slight unfil. PBing like that isn't good for your band. DH was too tight for a while, and lost almost every meal. He had to be pretty much unfilled because he had irritated his esophugus, and was heading towards a slip.

We all want to see that scale move, but we also want to be healthy!

You're not doing yourself any favors by being too tight. You take the chance of causing damage to your esophagus. It is not going to make you lose weight faster, but it will definitely make your life miserable. Get a slight unfill, work with your band.

Good luck!

The band was designed to work with food, not with vomiting. Make sure that the wonderful weight loss you are achieving is because you are eating correctly, not because you are vomiting it all away. Good luck.

I am surprised you would feel any restriction at all with just 3 cc's. I have a 10 Cc VG also...first fill was 3.6, next was about the same, and I don't feel I have adequate restriction yet. Have you considered that you may have a stricture? I think that's a pretty common occurance. I don't know how a stricture is diagnosed......can anyone here shed some light on strictures??

This is an explanation that I found on-line:

What Is a Stricture?

The lower esophagus can open to the size of a quarter or wider. When recurrent inflammation occurs in the esophagus, scarring develops, underlying tissues become fibrous, and the opening narrows. In advanced cases, this narrowing, or stricture, can be severe. The opening may be reduced to the size of a pencil or even smaller. food and Fluid are delayed and only move slowly across the opening into the stomach. A large piece of food, such as meat, may completely block the esophagus.

:help: I have a 11cc VG band and everytime I eat something gets stuck. I have been filled to 4.75 and when that first happen I definately could feel restriction! Now I just keep getting food stuck to the point that I am afraid to eat. Last 2 times things got stuck it was very horrible for me, sweating, spitting up slim and in some cases foam. I have never thrown up but the sweating, and other is enough for me! Anyway I don't know if I need a fill or unfill. I ate over 2 cups of cereral last nite because it went down so well and I felt hungry and had been scared to eat any other time yesterday for fear of getting things stuck. If I feel the slightest thing getting stuck I spit it out and quit eating. I would like to feel full instead of scared. Anyone got any ideas on this issue? Should I get an unfill or a fill? I was banded on June 7th and have not lost any weight in the last 3 weeks or so but in total lost 26 pounds since June.

I have the VG band which is the largest size band being made. It normally takes 5/6 fills before good restriction is gained. You may not be chewing your food enough or to the point of mush. I know we are not use to that but this is the only way for us not to get stuck.

But you may be one of those persons who have restriction just with the band or initial fill and if that is so, you still must watch what you eat and how you chew your food. This band is for real and complications will occur and cost you in the long run. Yes, we all want to lose the weight quickly but we didn't put it on quickly, for most of us it's been 20 to 30lbs a year but we want 100lbs off in a month:confused: at the risk of are band, are esophagus and/or even our health.

Please read the above post carefully and know that what is being said is for your benefit. Get an unfill if you need it, I've been there and done that and really didn't want to but hated the feeling of weakness and tired all the time. It will catch up with you and it won't be pretty. Please, please listen, it's for your own good.

you have to remeber also everytime you PB you may swell so if you try to eat solids again it will be difficult, many doctors tell their patients that after a pb you need to do liquids for 24 hours to reduce any swelling from the PB, if not it becomes a vicious cycle...also I agree if you are pbing more then once a week you need to have some saline removed. You risk slippage with pbing that often, did your doctor not tell you that. Having as little as .2 cc's removed can make a huge difference in being able to eat solids without pbing and still give you enough restriction to lose weight but eat solids. Be wise, take care of your band, you want it to last. I know my doctor would tell me I was too tight if I was pbing that often. to me it sounds like you need to give your esophagus a rest for a day or two though since the VG band usually takes longer to get restriction and more then 3cc's of fill..it may just be you are irritated from all the pbing. I once had a horrible PB episode and did not do liquids for 24 hours , I just continued to eat and let me tell you I wished I would of listened because I got the worst case of esophagitis which then forced me to do liquids for 2-3 weeks.

Darling, that sounds like you need a slight unfill and some education on chewing. I'm not trying to be ugly but if you are that scared to eat then something needs to give. You need to talk to your Dr. Good Luck!

If you have eaten too much do you pb almost as soon as you have swallowed. On Sunday I had some fish around 6 oclock. I did feel rather full but not uncomfortable. Some time in the night I woke feeling sick and had a feeling as if I some thing heavy in my stomach. I went back to sleep but woke again feeling sick and getting pains, as I reached the bathroom I was sick felt better went back to bed and sleep. I woke again a couple of hours later feeling the same was sick but also had diarreha. I started acheing all over which lasted for the rest of Monday except the sickness which I only felt but was only sick one more time. I still feel a bit sicky and the aches are just going off but what I would like to know is, was this vomitting a result of eating too much, food poisoning or bug. Also how do you know when you have band slippage

That sounds like like food poisoning but then again I don't know what it feels like to have my band slip. Can anyone explain what a slippage feels like?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
