adjective

1.

devoted to or caring only for oneself; concerned primarily with one's own interests, benefits, welfare, etc., regardless of others.

2.

characterized by or manifesting concern or care only for oneself: selfish motives.

This does not sound like you at all. In fact based on your post is sounds the exact opposite of you. A few days/weeks of recovery will not change how you ultimately love and care for your family but it certainly will change how you love, care, and respect yourself and your health and well being in the future.

Good luck to you. I hope you end up with some of what you need too!

I have been thinking about you and had to check the string to see what you had decided. I'm so happy that you have been able to get your daughters on the same page and they realize how important this is to and for you. Your husband sounds like a lot of guys I know. They want to always seem strong and sure of themselves, while inside they're frightened and unsure because they can't be the one to fix the situation. I hope he's able to come around and see that this is something you need to do for you, and his best course to "help" you get "fixed" is to support you the best he can while you recover.

Good luck and congrats on finding a way to make it happen for you!!

Hi - thanks for sharing a tough story and decision...

I'm a mother of a 12-year old daughter, married for almost 25 years, and I also work full-time... I take care of my mom too... I love caring for my family (who are very independent)... I decided to move forward with this surgery because I knew that if I didn't make the change, I had a real risk of not being around for them in the long-term... I needed to take care of myself first... then I could continue to help out the ones I love in a meaningful way... I want to be around for my daughter the way my mom is around for me.., that meant I had to change my health status.

My husband took a few days off work for me... we timed the procedure so my daughter could be at home with me to help me out (she was a huge help) and my mom made sure she was free to be with me too. They really helped me get through the first 10 days (which were the hardest for me mentally, the physical stuff was not bad at all)...

I hope that you can make your decision (whatever it may be) with 100% confidence and that you can be contented and happy with it... :o) Personally speaking, it was the best thing I have ever done for myself and for my family. We are all eating healthy now and exercising together.

I wish you all the best! Good luck!

- Sarah

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
