Anyone Have A Relatively Easy Recovery Story?

Recommended Posts

never really report when we "feel good."

dooter

you are right about people not talking about the good things. we do come on this board asking questions, reporting bad things that have happened that day, being sick, all that good stuff.

i was in hospital 2 nights - no major problems/or surprises with recovery. "little" nautious at home, didn't sleep well first night cuz of stiches. other than that - smooth sailing since WLS almost 8 months ago ;)

when i'm on this board , i would just feel silly saying "hey guys I'm having a great day" but

"hey guys I am having a great day. ;)

a day in the life of me

DH is home telecommuting - our small heat wave has settled down to 75 - and i bought a wendy's almond/berry 1/2 salad - um um good for lunch- also went to kohl's and bought new gym exercise clothes - can't get much better than that :)

kindof boring - but i'm loving it :)

continue "enjoying" your pre-op diet

8/20 is right around the corner woohoo

you are getting excited, and nervous too - we can all feel your vibrations

congrats on being a soon to be sleever :)

good luck with WLS

speedy recovery

Oh wait' date=' one last question for all of you sleeve vets: as far as mental clarity and energy, how quickly did you feel capable to be back at work even if you didn't necessarily go back at that time?

In addition to the immediate physical recovery, I've also read a lot about varying degrees of energy and being able to do a great job at work. I only ask because I will be starting a new job exactly 4 weeks after my surgery, and just trying to gauge if I'll be able to bring my A-game. :)[/quote']

I physically could have gone back to work the day after I came home from the hospital. However, if I had done so, there is no way I would have been able to follow my Water and diet exactly as described. I literally had a timer going off every 12 minutes I was awake telling me to drink my oz of Water.< /p>

I, too had a very uneventful recovery--no nausea, no vomiting, no pain. It was difficult the first week or two to get in enough water--I did the best I could and always managed enough so I was never dehydrated, but it took awhile to get in 64 oz, partly because I wasn't a Water drinker before surgery. I went back to work at 2 weeks post-op, got physically tired easily but I could concentrate. As someone else said, it's a full-time job just drinking all day the first couple of weeks.

I'm sure you will do great.

What does DH stand for? I figured it's your significant other.

Thanks for sharing these stories. I find them inspiring. I am hoping for the best, prepared for the worst physically but am a little worried about the emotional stuff. I did three rounds of hcg last year and early this year (gained it back...I'm sure you were curious) and the 500 calorie diet of lean meat and veggies pushed me into an emotional mess. I slept a lot because I was always hungry and travel for work was a nightmare (taking clients to dinner and ordering fish and steamed veggies; eating 1/3 and still being starving or being in the airport and smelling all of the crappy/amazing food - hell in earth). I hope that my sleev experience is different. I cannot fail again. Any perspective on the emotional aspect and what you did to help would be appreciated.

In the hospital for 48 hrs, no nausea, very little pain. On the way home from Cancun, had to connect in the Atlanta airport. We went from one end of that place to the other with customs and our connection, and other than being slow, no problems there. I had some pain and heat in my IV site, but I'd take that over being sick any day. Around 4 weeks I had my first slime episode, but all my fault for putting my sleeve to the test. If you think you MAY be full, stop there! In all honesty, this has been "physically' easier than I had imagined. Mentally, It's been more of a challenge. I miss my diet coke, and having a sweet tea with my meal. I'm adjusting and you will too!

That's helpful - thank you! I don't think I fully understand how focusing on getting certain foods will take time to ensure you do it correctly and well, so that makes sense.

I was one of the lucky ones. After my surgery I had ZERO pain or fatigue. The nurses even commented that I handled pain like a Champ because I wasn't using my pain pump. They were even more surprised when I told them I had no pain at all. I was even up and walking around the next morning. I would have probably been up and walking that day but my Doc thought it best for me to stay on bed rest for at least one full day.

Now after I got home, that was a different story. For almost two weeks I was wore down and did nothing but want to sleep.

I had a relatively ok recovery. I wouldn't say I'd do it again but I am allergic to narcotics and opiates so I had NO pain meds until I stumbled upon children's tylenol. If the can take the pain away, it couldn't have been that bad. I was sleeved last Monday. I am returning to the office on Wednesday but if I really pushed I could have gone today. My big reason is that my incisions are under where the underwire on my bra sits, so it can be uncomfortable to wear one. :) hope this helps. If you have a physically strenuous job, I would take two weeks. Don't overdo it.

I had a great surgery I had no pain, I was walking 2 hrs after surgery the next day I walked to pharmacy to buy my extra pills "I was sleeved in Mexicali" flew from San Diego to Sacramento & then I drove myself home 4 hrs away and I was perfectly fine I didnt have any pain meds or need them and I was back to work a week after surgery.... Everyone is very very different but I would do it again in a heartbeat i wish I did it sooner. Good luck I wish you nothing but the best.

I did have a hernia repaired and still didn't effect my pain any different :)

I had pretty easy time of it in the hospital. I only used the pain pump a few times after walking my laps. Once home, I never even had my pain meds filled at the pharmacy...never needed them! Other than 2 nasty bouts of indigestion, I haven't experienced any complications.

I'm 4 days out and the 4th day seems to be the magic number day :). The only real "problem" I had was the narcotic pain meds in hospital made me so nauseous that I didn't have an ounce of anything for the first 24 hours. once the dr. Switched the meds I went home and yes, uncomfortable and sore, your tummy is very bloated and keep in mind you've had surgery! :). It did take me until today to be able to get fluids down without pain...it's not like it's pain that you (or at least me) cry about, you just feel it, wait a few mins and try again. I was struggling to get fluids down and then All of a sudden this afternoon it doesnt bother me at all anymore... I

I've slept good every night I've been home and I have taken the prescribed Tylenol with codine so I can sleep comfortably. I look forward to sleeping on my side soon :). I also had a hernia repaired so not sure if that has anything to do with the delay in getting liquid down comfortably.

I think the biggest thing to remember is that it is surgery, there is going to be some pain/uncomfort or even things you haven't felt before. this is the first surgery I've ever had so a lot of unknowns for me. I've been very patient with myself and truly giving my body the rest it needs. :). I hope you are able to do the same and have the best experience possible. Good luck!

I also have to add -- I never had any problem eating or drinking, didn't have to force either one. It's been easy for me to drink a lot of fluids since day one, and eating has also been a breeze. Apart from dry heaves right after surgery, I've not thrown up/had slimes/foamies/etc. at all in the past 18 months since surgery. I've barely even ever had indigestion or things I would normally experience pre-op. Oddly, I've had an easier time stomach-wise than I had previously.

That said, I haven't escaped Constipation and related issues. But easily manageable with OTC stuff like Miralax, Colace.

I wasn't tired or dopey after a couple of days post-op and never felt like I couldn't e.g. stay awake and alert all day. I was off work for five weeks, but also just cos that's how they roll here. But I would have probably not had too much of a problem working after 2-3 weeks post-op.

NB: I didn't go through a period of 'starvation' or ketosis, b/c I've always included carbs in my diet (again, required here LOL) and I got up to 1000 cals per day asap, and then stayed at 1200-1500 throughout the losing period, when I was also not yet exercising heavily -- so I probably had enough calories to keep my energy levels up. ?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
