Jewelry During Surgery

Can I wear my wedding rings during surgery? I'm going alone and scared to lose my rings

No. You have to remove all jewelry. There is always a risk of shock, something getting snagged, etc. Just don't wear them to the surgery center.

IMO it would be safest just to leave them at home. My mother was hospitalized for an allergic reaction and they had to CUT her rings off because her hands were so swollen.

I had to take my ring off as well. Which is just as well because I'm now three weeks out and it's so loose I can't wear it anyway.

I do agree that it would be better to leave everything at home, but in case you don't, many US hospitals will have a safe place to keep your rings. I had an outpatient surgery where I went alone a few years ago, and security came down to take my purse, money and jewelry. They made an inventory list and returned them to me when I asked them for it.

No jewelry for me either. I just left everything at home for safe keeping. That way you don't have to worry where it is at the hospital.

Good luck on your surgery!!

Why would you wear jewelry for surgery? In general, this is the process:You will have to take it off for the surgery and it will be put in an envelope and given to security to store. When you are leaving the hospital, you will have to go to security to sign out the jewelry. In addition to the opportunities for someone to take the jewelry, there is the added aggravation of having to go through the process of getting it back when you are ready to leave.

they made me take off my wedding ring in the pre-op room and give it to my husband so do not wear one. The nurse said it was due to possible swelling and the need to cut it off if this happens. She said she has seen that before and did not want it to happen to me.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
