No they can't drug test you without your knowledge. (I'm a nurse)

The typical UA they would do [if they did one-mine never has in the office] would just check your urine for Protein, glucose, ketones, specific gravity, leukocytes[for infection]

Is it mandatory for surgery?

Would it have the same deleterious effects on healing that smoking tobacco does? If so, you might want to stop.

I am glad that you are planning on stopping. I have nothing against it for occasional recreational use, I don't think it is much different than alcohol in that sense. But I was curious when you posted this, so I just did a little searching, and, like tobacco, it can slow the healing process which can result in complications. Good Luck with your surgery.

Just be honest, your surgeon is not out to disqualify you. If you are honestly quitting, and if the question comes up, just tell them you recently quit. Problem solved. They are not going to refuse surgery because of it. Worst case scenario is if they have reason to believe that it will hinder your healing, they push your surgery out a couple weeks. Chances are though, if you quit today, by your surgery day, there would be no thc left in your system at all.

I was a hard-core cigarette smoker before surgery. Right up until I started the three week pre-op diet. I was frank with my surgeon about it and he didn't test me, but I did quit and my surgery was successful. I was probably the whiniest pre-op diet person ever because I gave up all my addictions at once: diet coke, all caffeine, smokes, food. I really feel sorry for my youngest son because he had to live with me through that! :)

I had to give a urine sample right before surgery but it was only to check for pregnancy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
