Has Anyone Not Experienced A Stall In The First 6 Weeks?

Recommended Posts

Hey,everyone! Has anyone not had a three week or early stall? I'm in the middle of week three and while weight loss has slowed down, it hasn't stopped yet (averaging 1/2 pound a day). I'm trying to prepare myself mentally for when it finally does happen. I keep reading about what a downer it is...then I started thinking that maybe there were some that never experience stalls...is that possible? Wishful thinking!??!?

As always, I have to say, everyone here has been an a amazing help and inspiration. So glad I heard about this site...you guys ROCK!

I'm interested to hear people's replies to this. I was kinda wondering the same thing, even if I'm still pre-op. :-P Won't be too long though till I'm 3 weeks out.

I am 9 weeks post op, and lost weight consistently until this week. I have been bouncing for a week now up and down. The first thought I had was, well, it was a good ride, and I'm definitely better at this weight, than I was before, so, if it's over, oh well......... That was my first thought.

Then I realized that, hey, it hits us all, and as long as I keep doing what I'm supposed to be doing, then my body will do what it's supposed to.

It does suck when it happens, but you have to listen to all those that have gone before us. After the stall, it starts dropping again.

My advice to you, that I've just started listening to is that the scale is not your friend. Don't weight yourself everyday. Pick a day every week and do it only on that day. That will save you many days of sorrow if you stall, but imagine the happy dance you will do on the weeks you lose 4-7 pounds, instead of the smile you get each day when you lose 1/2 a pound. Just my experience.

Good luck

I'm 3 1/2 weeks out and I'm already experiencing a stall. I haven't lost anything for about 1 1/2 weeks now. I do get on the scale 5 times a day and it's driving me absolutely crazy. I don't know why the stall, but it sucks. I'm getting very depressed.

In response to "I don't know why the stall, but it sucks. I'm getting very depressed"

Your body is adjusting. I've heard (and now experienced) that when you stall, your body is doing other things. Many sleevers have taken measurements of themselves durin their stall, and even though they aren't losing pounds, they are still having 'non scale victories'

Trust me, as long as you keep doing what you are supposed to, your body will eventually get back on the program with you.

I hit my first stall this week (week 7 - week 8). I'm trying to get past it by eating more Protein, and eating a little more quantity, too. Not weighing yourself often can help too. I haven't seen any movement on the scale (checked five days ago, and today--no change)

In the beginning, I was losing a ridiculous pound a day, so we knew that couldn't go on forever!

I am five months out and I have never had a stall. For a long time I was losing half pound a day like you. Now it's slowed a little bit to on average .4 pounds a day which I'm still very happy with that.

I usually only weigh myself once or twice a week and to those who have stalled if you're weighing yourself daily I would strongly discourage that. I also think that other reasons I haven't had a stall yet is because I eat very low calories – on average 500 a day even though my surgeon would prefer that I eat 800 cal. Also his postop diet is pretty strict compared to most. I cannot have any carbs other than fruits and vegetables until I am six months out and even then it will only be one serving a day. The only Carb I can honestly say I miss is pistachio nuts. One month more to go before I can have them :-)

I so feel you. I know I gained after my procedure with all te IV fluids etc... But I'm 10 days post op and maybe dropped 1 pound. Soooo frustrating and tears have replaced excitement. :(. I'm keeping the faith, took a walk on the beach tonight and hit a Protein record. Tryin to hang tough.

Yes. I am only 6 weeks out, but each time I stepped up to the next food phase I not only stalled, but put on a pound or two. I think this has more to do with my new "slower moving" system than anything else. As is typical for me, last Sunday I started soft foods and gained 2lbs in the first half of the week, second half I slowly dropped back down to my previous low, this morning I'm down 2lbs to a new low.

I know some say not to watch the scale, but I have to. I do not get upset at a small gain because I realize and accept the reasons my body does this. Watching each day is keeping my mind updated on how my body is reacting. This is a cool part of the journey for me.

Surprisingly, I didn't. I say surprisingly because pre-sleeve, every other "diet" I've been on I always stall after 2 weeks and then quit. I lost consistently for 3 months, and then only lost 3.6 lbs the whole month of July. So I call that a stall in my book. BTW I only weigh once/week. I did take progress pictures and have lost A LOT of inches. So I'm not letting this slow loss discourage me. My body will get with the program eventually :) I want my overall average to be 10 lbs/month, and I'm down 50 in 4 months, so I'm ahead of the curve.

Omg. You and I are exactly alike. I am 4 1/2 out. My nut told me not to let the scale control me. Lol. Like that's even possible. I've been stuck for almost two weeks now. It WILL get better. I have faith. Don't get depressed. Do something to take your mind off of it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
