I am now 4 weeks out and have started sliming. I know that it can happen by not chewing enough, eating to much or to fast, so I really made an effort to pay attention to all of that but it happened again today. Could it be from drinking to close to finishing my meal?

Thank for you input in advance!

Yes, it can be from all those things including drinking too early.

What is sliming?

It is where acid come back up into your mouth.

I always thought sliming was when you produced excessive amounts of very thick saliva (the body trying to lubricate & digest the food you just ate) resulting in a mucusy saliva (slime) being forced back up.

I did not know this had a name. It happened to me 2 times in the middle of the night. I woke up thinking somehow I was drowning. Wow it has a name, thanks

I'm 7weeks post op and started sliming 6 weeks post op. I though it was because I was eating too fast but then noticed that it was happening when I ate meat. Today, for example, I had skinless chicken thigh and pinto Beans with cheese. I started w/my chicken and immediately started slimming! I stopped eating it and just ate the beans and cheese and I was able to finish my meal, well minus the chicken. Not sure what that is about...

You have to learn to eat realllllly slow. And stop 1 bite before you're full. It has taken almost 10 months for me to quit sliming. You will notice it more when you stomach is full or you took 1 bite too many. Hang in, it's a learning curve. Remember, it takes 20-30 minutes to your brain to catch up to your stomach, and you will want to take one more bite even though you are full. Thankfully, it's not real acidic, I just keep a cup handy and spit it out.

Sliming happens for the reasons above, as well as when you're trying to eat something your body isn't ready to handle (aka, the chicken, CraftyV). It may be on your surgeon's list, it may be something that everybody else seems to be able to tolerate with no problem, but for you, it's a problem food. I have had this issue from the get-go, and yeah, still can't eat chicken (or most other kinds of meat). I've learned to take it SLOW. When I got/get this type of reaction, I stop eating immediately. I avoid the offending food for a while and try it again in a couple of months. Sometimes I get lucky and can tolerate it. Sometimes I still can't. But I did get to where I could eat egg whites--and the only way I know that is by trying them several times over a period of months.

Vegetable Proteins seem to be simple for my body to digest, and I get less of the sliming. So maybe switch away from chicken for a while and try it again in a few months. Focus on the other types of Protein and see if you can come back to chicken later. Hang in there--the whole thing gets so much easier as you go.

Yes it can happen too from drinking too soon. I'm surprised you aren't vomiting. Becareful because my doc says if you drink too soon after you eat over time you can strech your sleeve from the excess.

I started sliming this last weekend and it seemed to be a result of consuming a very small portion of non fat frozen yogurt (it was literally a spoonful). It happened again today when I ate a piece of a banana. I'm thinking my kryptonite for the time being might be sugar since other diary products have not bothered me. I'm glad to hear that it is not always permanent although an aversion to sugar could be a positive thing! ;)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
