Eating Too Fast? Pain In Chest For A Second While Eating

Recommended Posts

it feels really uncomfy/painful for a few seconds (usually 2-3 times) when eating... is it because of eating too fast? or too much? I'm trying to measure my food out of a small dixie cup (usually 1/2 - 1/3) Its like a 'tightness" burning and then goes away and sometimes tightens back up. Its more in my chest than stomach and almost feels like something is "stuck" and then it just vanishes...

When I eat too much (and it really is a matter of just 1 tiny bite!) I feel pain high up...in the middle of my chest (think sternum area). I've found that if I get up and walk around for a few minutes the discomfort will lessen. Burping often helps, too. Mostly, I just try REALLY HARD to NOT eat that 1 tiny bite too many!! LOL To avoid, eat very tiny bites (I use a cocktail fork now, and a tiny spoon...found both at Bed Bath & Beyond for $1.99 each), chew each bite til its (literally) liquid in your mouth, and eat very slowly. Eating slowly will allow you the time to feel your "fullness" before it gets to the "OMG I think I'm gonna die" stage! :) Best of luck!

I'm on the 2 week post -op liquid phase now and will sip from little one oz cups and I get the same pain up in my chest several imes when sipping. I was hoping it would eventually go away, as it can't be the amount I'm eating because it is so little.

Yeah, it's hard to take small bites and slow down but you must to prevent this from happening.

I am 3 weeks out and nothing seems to bother me. I can eat anything and i eat fast but I do know when im full. I do have to work on slowing down. Im just so darn hungry that I just gobble it down.

okay.. i just tried it with a pickle.... and eat teeny bites, slowly... all good. :) Now i have to work on finding what my 'trigger' is for knowing when enough is enough before i take that "last bite' that tips me over from satisfied into into uncomfy full.. because its just one bite!

I did this last night with liquid. ;( I'm only 4 days post op and I was trying to finish all of my Protein drink...because, by gosh it protein and I need my protein!!! Anyway, I felt a lot of pressure in my chest and I knew I had gone too far. Fortunately a few deep breaths got me through it. I'm so nervous to move to mushies, as hungry as I am I'm afraid I'm going to over-do it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
