going_down 2 Posted August 5, 2012 Ok, aside from knowing that Protein helps heal, helps with lean muscle mass, and helps keep you full, does it actually help with losing weight? Like say you weren't a WLS patient and just wanted to lose some weight.. and started doing a liquid diet that didn't contain a whole lot of protein VS: one that did. ShannonK 266 Posted August 5, 2012 Yep. I sis Atkins and lost a lot of weight - just couldn't keep it off. Protein keeps you full longer and is burned/stored differently that carbs.
SunnyCox 245 Posted August 5, 2012 There is a great article that I came across that discusses the benefits of Protein in weight loss: http://www.jacn.org/...ppl_6/631S.full. It is a scientific journal, and the reading is pretty dry. In short, when you increase protein intake over the basic amount needed, then the branch chain amino acids, which are metabolized in your muscles (not in your liver as are other amino acids), directly and favorably benefit muscle function and health – including enhanced calorie burning by muscle that supports healthy weight loss. Another interesting point in the article mentions that eating more protein for Breakfast is beneficial. My PCP is a bariatric specialist. He had told me to eat at least 30g of protein for breakfast daily. This article helped me to understand why it helps.
