Increase In Migraines- Is It Surgery, Or Is It Me?

Recommended Posts

Since surgery in February, I've experienced a marked increase in my Migraine activity. I was down to about one or two a year, and since surgery, I've had 5 or 6. I have one right now, which is what made me remember to ask. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm wondering if it's surgery related, or just me. I know this isn't a very scientific method of getting a true answer, but I'm just wondering what, if anything, you all have experienced.

Oh my gosh! Me too! I just had one today..it knocked me out all day. I had to just lay in bed. I had a HUGE increase in my Migraines and the fact that I can't take my excedrine makes it ten timed worse.

The nurse said it is not because of the surgery so I have no idea what to do. But I am so tiered of them.

Hi ladies. You can try magnesium and b2 my Migraine doc has me in these for life. I also have Imitrex which is availble sub Q. I hope my Migraines don't flair up! My surgery is in 10 days!

Thanks for the info!!

In the past, when I have done low carb diets, it would bring on Migraines. I would also get them if I was dehydrated or had gone a long time without food. I'm not sure why. I have only had one since surgery on June 28, and it was when I started on Clear liquids.

I use an Rx med, zomig. It is the only med that has ever helped me, and I have tried several. It even works several hours after my Migraine start which is different than a lot of meds where you must take them immediately when the migraine starts.

I suffer from Migraines, high was 17 in one month, usually 10 - 12. For a month after surgery I had NONE!!!! It had to be because I was eating very little....very little variety and very healthy!! Slowly but surely they came back. I'm on a new preventive and am keeping them at about 8 per month....but I had high hopes that surgery would 'fix me' :) Good luck, I really have no advice!

I had an increased number for, oh, about six months or so. I used to go months and months without one, and in the early months I was laid up with one just about every month.

They faded, however, into regular headaches (that lingered) over the first year, and now that I'm two years out I just realized I can't remember when I had my last Migraine or headache.

I think it's all the wacky in our bodies. Fat cells store all sorts of ugly things and that could be part of it. As your body adjusts, hopefully your Migraines will decrease like mine did.

Oh, and Imitrex is a great drug for migraines, true. But in both my mother in law and myself it caused tinnitus, which doesn't go away when you stop using the drug.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
