Insurance And Band Removal ?

Recommended Posts

I am just wondering if anybodies insurance componany consider having the band removed as another wls ? I am with united health and they only will pay for one wls in a lifetime . I had my band put on blue cross and blue sheild so dont have to worry about that . Just worried about what they consider for band removal

I had my Lap Band surgery in August of 2010 and I am having the band removed on Monday. I am also having a Gastric Sleeve done in October. My insurance is covering both the Lap Band removal as well as my Gastric Sleeve in October. I have Independent Health of WNY. The Lap Band removal is covered because it was considered a "failure".

I believe a lap band revision to gastric sleeve is considered one WLS procedure. They take the band out, let the stomach rest and heal and then convert you to a gastric sleeve in October. Insurance would be billed for the procedure in full at the time the revision is completed.

I would call your insurance company just to get a clear understanding.

I have United healthcare too and they consider them two procedures. There are two different procedure codes. I was approved immediately for the band removal due to complications. I was denied by them twice for the sleeve surgery. I appealed a third time to my employer and finally won. I am thrilled with my sleeve. What a major difference over the band.

I wish you all the best in getting your approvals. If they give you any problems appeal. Don't give up you won't regret it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
