Losing Weight Too Fast And Dealing With New Issues

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am almost 2.75 months post op and have lost 82 pounds. I got rid of sciatica (for the most part), diabetes and I think my sleep apnea is fading away. Now, I am a clothes horse. It is nice to shop from the 2X-4X shirts and just not the 4X-5X leftovers. The problem I discovered after good workout yesterday was hanging skin. Of course, with sweat and hanging skin, I am developing nasty boils (I think that is how that is spelled). I am not sure what to do. It doesn't help that my office is hot and I sit most of the day. I don't want to slow down my weight lost, but this boils are nasty, they hurt and they control my mood.

Also, I am a little scared now. Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. is being treated for serious depression at mayo Clinic. You can read about it. A doctor has come out and said that 80% of weight loss surgery patients go through depression. I haven't done the research, but is anyone else finding this to be creditable? If so, what can we do to keep ourselves safe from depression?

Wow 82 pounds Thts incredible! Even if you have hanging skin that's almost a whole person!

Just keep in mind how much healthier you will be in the long run that's what I keep telling myself. I am only 3 days post op but I can't wait for the future and to be healthy. That's part of my plan not to get depressed. Nothing to be depressed about you're losing weight and looking great!

Have you had the boils before? How big are they? (like size of quarter?) Do they hurt? Do they drain any Fluid? If you answered yes, it "could" be MRSA. You might want to check with your doctor. They can give you antibiotics to treat them and possibly give you nasal ointment to prevent colonization. I'm not saying that's what it is, but you don't want to take any chances. You should let your doctor know about them. BTW, MRSA boils during a flare up can make you feel like you have the flu or drain your energy. I think having any kind of painful boil or something like that would affect anyone's mood. I hope you feel better soon!!!

Sounds like you and I are on similar paths. I was sleeved May 10 and have lost 88 pounds. first of all, are you sure those are not ingrown or infected hair follicles? If they are you can shave the area with a razor regularly and they shouldn't come back. I also use a lot of baby powder in areas that would otherwise stay wet. Helps keep my skin dry. Finally, do you wear cotton undershirts? Those things are awful if you sweat in them. Try the quick dry shirts. Under armor makes some, but I like the Dry Fit shirts by reebok. They sell them at casual male.

Keep in mind, the boils may be painful, but more than likely manageable with your dr's help. Most important, they will make plastic surgery a "medical" necessity instead of "cosmetic", so in a small way, they are a good thing.

Congrats on the WONDERFUL weight loss. Keep looking for the positive and try your best to avoid the negative. Talk to you primary, or call you psychologist and tell them if you are having any bouts of depression. They can help you with therapy, or medication (or both). Don't be afraid to ask for help. It's not a weakness. (I've been on a low dose of Welbutrin and it's helped a lot. My primary saw the signs when I burst into tears talking to him last year during my physical about my struggle losing weight all my life. I've only been seeing him 2 years and he caught on that fast. None of my other doctors ever said anything.)

You definitely want to see your doctor about boils and rashes that come up with sagging or folding skin. Usual treatments include things like antibiotics, prescription hydrocortisone, and steroid treatments. Keeping the area clean by washing gently with a mild soap and patting thoroughly dry can help, but this is something you want a doctor's help on, not to try to treat it with home remedies. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
