Help! What is going on?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am 9 days post banding and feeling pretty good. I am now on some mushy foods and feeling good that I dont have to be on liquids anymore. My problem is that whenever I eat anything for several hours after I have pieces of food that feel like they are in my throat. I am not spitting up or anything but I am having to constantly swallow to get them out of my throat. I dont think I am overeating, I am not eating much at all. It seems to worsen as the day goes on and by night time I can hardly go to bed because of all this food in my throat. Before being banded I had acid reflux really bad. My Dr said I would no longer need to take my medication. I was wondering if maybe I still have the reflux and this is how it acts with the band. I dont know. I am so confused. Is what I am feeling normal, am I overeating, is this reflux?????? :help: Please let me know if you have any suggestions or advice.

Thanks, Johni Sue

Hi Johni,

I don't have exactly what you do, probably not even close, but I do feel like I have air trapped in my stomach/esoph similar to a burp. Nothing really helps it, just kind of goes away on its own. That's the closest I can relate, and it's probably not the same thing. Does your doctor have a number that you can call afterhours to reach him if you are very concerned?

Doughmommy, congatulations on being banded! Does drinking help this food move down? Reflux, as you know, is the phenomenon of things moving up, rather than down, the esophagus, and this is exactly what you seem to be describing. Talk to your doctor, indeed. If your medication helped before banding you may not be able to give it up completely just yet.

Good luck!!

I stayed on meds for my reflux for a couple of months after banding. Now I don't need it anymore. Maybe you should ask the doc to prescribe it for you for a while longer.

Johni,

I saw your post in the SMMC Chicas forum, and saw that you're from Salina, KS. I'm from Abilene, work in Salina, and am going to be banded soon. I am just waiting on my insurance to approve. I'm being banded by Dr. Brent Steward in Topeka at the Tallgrass surgical center. It's nice to know I won't be by myself way out here!

Does that food sticking feeling happen when your on liquids? Maybe your tummy isn't ready for food yet? I would stick to liquids for a bit longer and see what ur doc says about the reflux.

I had the same feeling and I think I took Pepcid AC. That really helped me. You are probably swollen as well so that doesn't help. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
