cbshotwell 0 Posted August 3, 2012 Hi everyone- I need your help. I am scheduled for Gastric Sleeve surgery on August 14. I also was just offered an AMAZING new job today. It is a semi- physical position. I want to tell them that I can start work on Aug 29 (2 weeks post surgery). Is this crazy? Am I trying to do too much? I have the option of bringing in a 'helper' to do any physical work needed in the first week I'm back. I just would like some input from people that have gone through this. I want to be fair to my body, but also be available to start the position as soon as possible. Thanks! CB
Back~To~Amy 307 Posted August 3, 2012 When you say semi-physical, are you talking about lifting things? I had a 10 pound limit until 6 weeks out. I would be worried about lifting much more than that at 3 weeks out.
cbshotwell 0 Posted August 3, 2012 Hi! No I wouldnt have to lift if I couldn't. There will be plenty of people to help with that I think. My question is more about the physical pain and mental readiness to start a new job at 2 weeks post surgery....want to know if I am a crazy person for considering it... Thanks! t.ski 61 Posted August 4, 2012 I am a week and a half post op and go back to work tonight, and I feel like I am ready. I am a nurse on a med Surg floor, so it is fairly physical. I don't really have any pain, moments of OCC. mild discomfort, but nothing too distressing. I have had a very non eventful recovery .
jessica6 1 Posted August 5, 2012 I am scheduled to go back on Monday, and I'm only 4 days out right now. But I'm a receptionist. I'm noticing that everyone has different after effects from surgery and right now I have no energy or anything. I'm not sure if I will be able to return Monday. Back~To~Amy 307 Posted August 5, 2012 I would say that so long as your pain is under control, you should be fine. Even if it isn't totally gone, it will only be temporary. I say go for it! Congrats on it, btw!
unknown54678997 50 Posted August 5, 2012 I'm going back to work tomorrow. I am 11 days post op and am definitely ready both physically and mentally Your not really going to know until the time comes but if there are no complications, you should be fine and I say go it. Skip the lifting for awhile though. Good luck with everything

Especially because you will feel weak and tired and youve just had major surgery. Your body needs to heal. By about day 10, you should be getting a good amt of Protein in and feeling so much better. LittleRed30 38 Posted August 5, 2012 Go for it. I'm going back after a week off. I'm can't be off that long. Sent from my SCH-I800 using VST
jessica6 1 Posted August 5, 2012 I only scheduled off for the rest of the week. I guess I will see what the morning brings me. My Dr. said some people go back within just a few days, so I figured that 6 days would be adequate. :-(
phillygirl8133 74 Posted August 5, 2012 My doctors gave me ten weeks off of work I don't lift anything heavy hmm well I guess I'll enjoy my vacation
jessica6 1 Posted August 5, 2012 Holy crap! 10 weeks? I would need the money. That's a long time.
beefalogal 43 Posted August 5, 2012 I will be on lifting restrictions for 4 to 6 weeks. I travel for work and the suitcase pretty much cancels that. I am sure that it will be expected that I travel earlier but even if hubby loads the suitcase in the car I will have to lift out and put it in and out of the rent car.
