Brand New To The Board - Looking For The Best Pre-Op Tips

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

I'm new here, I have completed all my pre-op appointments, insurance has approved everything, and I see my surgeon August 9th for our final meet up.

on the 9th she will most likely be putting me on the 2 week liquid diet, but I feel like I have about 9-13 pounds to lose before I even see her again.

I realize that's probably not a reasonable goal, but any amount I can lose before than would help.

Can anyone tell me what they did for their pre-op diet that gave the best results? As I browsed this section quickly I had saw one reply that said they lost 36 pounds on the liquid diet, I'd sure as heck like to know what she did!

I plan on swimming at least an hour a day whenever possible up until then as well.

Surgery is so close I can feel it.

I don't want anymore delays!

Thanks!

First off welcome and congratulations on being approved. I only had a 24hr clear liquid diet prior to surgery but my dr has his patients do a 2 week pre-op based on their pre-exisiting weight, conditions, etc.

Were you supposed to have lost weight before next week? Try not to stress yourself out too much.

I can offer that my dr gave me a nausea patch to put on the night before surgery and it lasts for 3 days. I can say that I believe that this prevented me from having nausea post-op.

Good luck and keep us posted on how your surgery goes :)

Thank you for the Welcomes :)

When I first saw my surgeon I was advised to lose 10 pounds before surgery, on top of 20 pounds on a liquid diet 2 weeks before surgery - so for me 30 pounds total.

Well, I foolishly over ate and over socialized the month of seeing her and before seeing my dietician for the 1st time, and had gained 10. I lost the 10 I gained, but now I'm stalled on the original 10 she wanted me to lose.

I don't want to get on her scale, not having lost any weight from her point of view, though once she skims my chart, she will see I had gained then lost.

I'm pretty stressed about it honestly.

I was thinking of drinking a gallon of Water a day, and just kind of sticking to greek yogurts.

I am currently on the way to losing the 36 lbs I have to lose before I can get a date. I met with my nutritionist last week and she gave me an amazing plan. I've lost 11 lbs so far and haven't been super hungry.

Breakfast, Protein shake

Mid-morning, Protein Bar

lunch, lean meat

Mid-afternoon, shake

dinner, lean meat and non-starch vegetables

Evening, Protein Bar

It's certainly not "easy," but it's very doable and has worked well for me so far. Good luck!

So you lost 11 pounds in a week? wow :)

My usual plan was this:

Breakfast- Protein shake

lunch - fresh lunch meat and cheese - no bread

dinner - serving of meat

But somewhere I strayed with the whole "omg I'll never eat any of this stuff again" and bad food crept back into the plan.

I DO feel like I won't cheat once surgery comes into play, it's just kind of been the mindset that I still can eat this and never will again. But I'm setting myself back on track TODAY.

Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like. You were not getting enough Protein and food to satisfy you. I had the same problem. I'm going to try to follow Aaron's plan.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
