Self Pay! But I Need Ideas On How To Pay For Surgery....

Recommended Posts

Hi! My name is Amanda, I have decide I need weight loss surgey. I am 24 years old, and I am on a fixed income. My insurance will not cover surgery. I have no credit, so I do not qualify for a loan. Does anyone know where I can get a loan, that will not disqualify me for having no credit? Any ideas on how I could go about raising money for this operation would be much appreciated. This surgery is something I need, not just want. Six years ago I was in an automobile accident. I am currently paralyzed from the waist down. I have been heavy my whole life, but since the accident my weight continues to grow. I have already met with a surgeon and I meet all the criteria. I have almost half the money saved up. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate them! Thank You!

P.S.: I have already tried Care Credit and I did not qualify.

If you have half the money saved up then you are almost there! Dr. Almanza office in Mexico will let have the surgery with just 3000 down(I think) and you can finance the rest with office. Talk with a patient advocate. Best of luck to you.

I worked an extra part time job and saved for about a year to pay for mine. It's hard, but you can do it.

I'm sure you would like to have the surgery sooner rather than later but is there any way you can work to establish credit now? Obviously a loan or a large enough credit limit for surgery is probably not possible but what about applying for a low interest, low credit limit major credit card just to get your credit established. It will probably benefit you in the future. There is a website, I think it's creditcards.com, where you can find specific cards to meet your situation and needs.

That way you are more likely to be approved. If all else fails with the surgery options, maybe you can start to build your credit and eventually be approved for the financing you need. But, again, I understand the impatience during this process, it's just a thought. Good luck!

Mexico is a lower cost option than American surgeons. Chances are if you have half the money saved for an American surgeon then you likely have all you'd need to have it done in Mexico. Spend some time researching it & you'll also find that most of your Mexican surgeons are more expierience than their American counterparts. And most people that have surgury in Mexico report less pain and discomfort afterwards.

As much as I would love to advise you on financing options, I know my advice would not be what you are looking for. I view credit & debt as a cancer, it has destroyed individuals, families, businesses, & even countries. It might take a bit longer to get this done paying cash, but the last thing you need is he stress of debt looming over you while you are trying to heal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
