Hello again. I was sleeved on Tuesday (7/31) by Dr Kim in Dallas. He said he found a 4cm hiatal hernia that he repaired while inside. Who knew?? Just curious as to how many of you also had a repaired hernia and how you feel it effected your recovery time. I'm 3 days post op and still really sore and SLOW! Lol.

I have a hiatal hernia too - I am aware of it though and surgeon is going to fix it while he is there too. I do hear that recovery is a little different with that and the VSG but not any lengthier.

Glad they found it and repaired - good luck to you in your weight loss journey!

This may sound bad, but my insurance does not cover bariatric surgery of any kind, I have to pay cash for this surgery. So I hope I have a hiatal hernia, then they will pay for part of the surgery. I have to go in for a stomach scope soon and we will see. So newlifeforlittleME, I am assuming your hurnia did not bother you at all? Well hope you all get better and feel better soon!

I had my surgery on Monday (30th) and I also had a large hiatal hernia. Didn't know about it before hand. Though I did have pretty bad reflux, and periodic inability to swallow certain foods. (shouda guessed!).

I was VERY sick the first 24 hours. I would get violently nauseous and threw up even 1-2 ice chips. The edema in my stomach was preventing any fluids from moving through. After some lasix and steroids, that helped a lot. I had to stay an extra day and came home Wednesday. I'm trying to get my liquids in, but not meeting goals yet. Water hurts to drink. I'm drinking my Isopure (nasty), Gatorade, broth, etc. I have quite a bit of pain at my incision sites, especially the far right one. I'm slow getting up and moving around. I'm slow drinking. Yesterday I had some beef broth and it tasted good, but I think I had too much at a time (was sipping with a spoon) and my stomach hurt and felt Water logged. I walked around some to try to get it moving.

I get very tired very easily. Taking a shower wears me out. I have a 6 yo and 2,.5 yo and luckily my husband has been home with them this week. I'm hoping by next week my energy levels will be up.

I had an unknown hiatal hernia that was repaired during my VSG. Surgeons are being trained to look for them because with a sleeve stomach, if they don't fix them during the VSG it's likely the smaller stomach will slide up through the too-big opening in the diaphragm.

My recovery was so uneventful, no nausea, no vomiting, no pain. I don't know if the hernia repair affected recovery, I can't imagine it being any easier than it was. After my gallbladder removal I hurt like blazes for a week.

I was sleeved on the 31st as well. I had a surprise hernia as well. I was in the hospital for 2 days and had quite a bit of pain, due to the gas - my shoulder was extremely painful - I didn't have much pain from the incisions but the gas was horrible. I'm home now and the pain has gotten better but I am extremely sore! Not just the incision but my muscles in my back are extremely sore - I guess from not being in good shape and compensating for my stomach muscles. I have been walking and it does help. I have not had any nausea and have been able to keep liquid down without incident. My husband will be having the surgery on August 14, so he has been a little apprehensive. Everyday is getting better and I am really ready to be able to stand straight and walk without pain.

Yeah I was told about a small hital hernia found during the UIpper GI, I think the plan is to fix it during sleeve surgery. Sandy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
