Slamming A Drink...

Recommended Posts

Currently, as a pre-opper I think nothing of slamming back a bottle of Water after a long walk or workout to quench my thirst. I have often wondered how this will work post-op. Are you still able to slam a bottle of water?

Obviously I know that right after surgery and probably for a few months out it is all about sipping, sipping, sipping BUT with that said what about being months/years out - are you able to turn up a bottle of water and "chug" it?

I am 5 weeks post op and I can drink like i always have. I couldnt the first few weeks but after that I drink gulps as I am always thirsty. But beware if you drink to much at first it will hurt and can come back up. So just adjust to how you feel.

few months out it is all about sipping, sipping,

UTG199

after my WLS i only drank small amounts of Water.

didn't take me that long to be able to drink at a faster rate -

after speaking w/NUT she said ok to me drinking gulps of Water - not ever 6 weeks after surgery

8 weeks out, and I am doing okay. For the first 5 weeks, drinking out of a water bottle hurt me, even sips. I had complications during surgery so that could be part of the problem. I am fine with drinking out of a Water bottle, but I still can't slam down water like I used to.

Almost 5 months out and I can't chug. I don't have to sip but if I drink Water too fast I feel kinda sick for a few seconds.

You will only be able to "slam" the capacity of your stomach. But the good news is that Water really flows through your stomach very quickly.

For example, right now I am 10 weeks post op & have a stomach capacity of about 4-5oz. Therefore I can quickly drink 4 oz of Water, wait a few seconds and do another 4oz. & repeat.

I can drink a .5L(16.9oz) bottle of water in under a minute, not that I make a habit of this.

At 1year post-op my stomach capacity will be 10oz which will allow me to drink 1/2 of the same bottle, breath for a couple seconds then finish it.

Thanks for asking that, I was curious on this too. I was a big Water chugger before surgery and sipping is hard for me to get used to, but it's working alright so far.

Just curious...how do you know your stomach will be able to hold 10 oz in a year?

I'm 4 months post op and it's getting better, little by little I notice that I can drink more Water in bigger gulps.

That was the number I was given by my surgeon. It may not be an exact number, but it's pretty close.

My doctor told me I would be able to eat 3-4 oz but he never said it could increase...I guess over time I will see.

I'm the same way as chitowngirl. I wish that I could drink Water like before. Today I hiked Yosemite and was so thirsty. I drank 3.5 liters in six hours and was so thirsty! I actually chose to drink ice water over eating dinner. I've been home for an hour and a half and I'm still freaking thirsty! Grrr.

I'm 8 weeks, 2 days out and can chug Water just like I did preop. I've been able to for a few weeks now.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
