Protein Shakes Only Twice A Week?

Recommended Posts

Met with my NUT yesterday one on one and she told me I can only have Protein Shakes twice a week as a Meal Replacement before I hit the pre-op stage. I just wondered why she would say that. I love the Protein shakes and they keep me full between meals. ALSO... I didn't do 100% well in the two weeks since I've seen her so I have to go back for her to see my journal before I can get a surgery date. Surely she doesn't expect me to be great at watching what I eat; I am trying to break 29 years of bad eating habits... **Frustrated**

Well, she probably wants to see if you can make food changes on your own, without relying on Meal Replacements....

My NUT wants us to eat protien as much as possible, so I use shakes or extra protien about 3 times a week....but I'm post-op...

Best of luck to you!

I agree that she prob wants you to start developing healthy eating habits now. My nut says drinking Protein Shakes is fine immediately post op, but as soon as we are able she prefers we consume our calories via food. I feel it is a good concept as I don't really care to supplement my food for Protein Drinks.< /p>

I just had my 2 wk post op appt on Tuesday and was told 1 Protein shake (30 g) a day and try to get the other 30-45 g from food.

Boy, this whole process is a life altering experience. Just do your best to follow their program. They understand that you are human and no one expects perfection. They are there to help us navigate our way. It will take time to learn what works for you.

You have made the first step to be healthier and should be proud of yourself!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
