Three Days Post Op... Any Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

So I decided to go to Tijuania, Mexico for my sleeve. BCBS was taking forever to approve me so I had decided to go through a company called Ready 4 a Change. It was less than $4500 and the process from start to finish took about a week. We are staying at the nicest hotel, the Marriotj and the hospital was clean and quaint itself. But now is where my worry sets in at. I have questions about dieting, exercising and just tons of other questions. Like when can I start working out and what can I do to expedite my weight loss?

I was told to walk from day one. All othe exercises had to wait until I was a month out. I don't know that there's anything you can do when you are newly sleeved to excellerate weight loss. All you can do is focus on getting in Water (first) and Protein. Good luck on your journey. This is an excellent site for support and information.

You should have gotten an information package that had your post op diet in it, it should have info about exercise and stuff too. These boards are a great place to search too if you put in key words to the search bar at the top of the page. I have had all sorts of questions, but so have 100 others, and there are a lot of anwers out there!

They didn't give you any information? They should have.

But here is a brief summary of my Dr.s plan.

Walk every 2 hours while you're awake for the first 2 weeks.

At 2 weeks you can start some other exercises like elliptical and cycling, but easy does it and only if you feel no discomfort. No lifting anything heavy for at least 6 weeks.

2 weeks on full liquids.

then 2 weeks on mushies, anything you can mash with a fork.

then at 4 weeks out start slowly introducing regular foods...one at a time.

Try to get in at least 64 ounces of Water a day, and 60 to 90 grams of Protein. It will be difficult to do that the first week, but will get easier as you heal. The Water and walking are the most important things on this list.

I was given information however most of it is in Spanish so I'm having a hard time translating

They don't have a packet of information that's translated? I would ask them if they do have an English packet. It seems like they would because many of those programs accept English speaking patients.

I agree that the search tool on this website is great for looking up information. If you have questions about pureed foods, just type that into the search and you'll have tons of questions and answers =) That might give you more specific information to the exact questions you're looking for.

As for post op diet - my doctor said 1 week full liquids, 1 week puree, 2 weeks soft foods, then regular foods. I haven't been for my 2 week appointment yet though, so I'm not sure what additional information we will discuss at that point. *Note: Each doctor seems to have a varied diet. You may want to contact your clinic and see if they will explain yours to you over the phone. I have heard some doctors do 3 week liquid diets, some do only 5 days.

Walk a lot to help decrease the gas.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
