NickyD 45 Posted August 1, 2012 6 days post-op and all is going well. Feeling good and coping with liquids well! But I have a couple of questions: 1) my tongue is really furry-you know coated with white fur! Any ideas on this? (thinking just result of all the meds in the last week???) 2) what happens to all the staples? Will the row of metal staples be there forever? My surgeon gave me a DVD of my op and so I saw exactly what it all looked like in there and my brother watched it too-and he asked me if the staples stay or disintegrate and I have no idea? Thanks all Xxx
soccermomx2 111 Posted August 1, 2012 The staples are titanium and you will have those for life. That is neat you actually received a DVD of the surgery. Is your tongue and throat actually white? If they are you could have thrush from the antibiotics and surgery. I would check with your dr office. Glad your feeling well otherwise!
Rootman 1,101 Posted August 1, 2012 Yep the staples are forever, the body will encase them in a bunch of scar tissue and they would be covered up but they will always be visible on an x-ray other other imaging system, And there is not issue with MRI's or anything like that, they are non ferrous, that is not effected by magnets. The tongue coating more than likely it's the result of your body entering ketosis. When you start to burn fat it changes your blood chemistry and causes bad breath, nasty taste and this tongue coating. Think of it like a car burning oil and blowing smoke, it's the "smoke" that's coating your tongue. It's harmless but nasty. get a tongue scraper at the store and use a good mouthwash. It'll pass - but may take a few months or more. 1 PdxMan reacted to this
gettingsleevedintexas 10 Posted August 1, 2012 Holy crap, I never even thought about the staples! Will they set the alarm off going through security at the airport?
fluffylibra30 323 Posted August 1, 2012 No, my doc told me the staples should be invisible to the metal detectors. It would be interesting to see in a TSA screen though.

Willow216 91 Posted August 1, 2012 Wow you got a DVD on your surgery that is so cool, I would've loved to have seen my surgery. (I think?) LOL 2 AnewG2012 and mylifeinpink reacted to this
soccermomx2 111 Posted August 1, 2012 No, titanium shouldn't go off at the airport. My mom has a titanium rod in her spine and she doesn't set off any metal detectors ;-}
AliveAgain 283 Posted August 1, 2012 Titanium is widely used in operations, and they won't set off detectors. I just flew last month, no problems at all. I was more worried about my bags of Protein Powder that looked like kilo's of cocaine!
Izuri 428 Posted August 1, 2012 I'm glad to hear that you're doing well! The staples are our buddies for life. Your body will grow a thick layer of scar tissue around them. It shouldn't ever be any issue for getting through security at the airport. My doctor's office did tell me though to make sure to tell any MRI technician/doctor before they do any kind of MRI scan on you. I don't imagine that it would immediately disqualify you from having an MRI but that's something they'd definitely wanna know. I have the white tongue from being in ketosis too =( Brush brush and tongue scraper!
NickyD 45 Posted August 1, 2012 Thanks all. Yes, gave the tongue a good brush to***ht-yuk! As for the staples- I guess all I can say is "welcome to me!" Xx 1 mylifeinpink reacted to this

I fly out in a couple weeks and wanted to take Protein Powder in a Ziploc, but figured that would be a bad idea lol. Trying to avoid buying million dollar Protein from a convenience store. I think I may order some that comes in a pack to take with me.
AliveAgain 283 Posted August 2, 2012 I did fine with two sandwich bags full of Protein powder, not a peep. Oh, and for the MRI question - I've had two since surgery, no problems there either with the staples. But do tell them!

They travel well, they're pre measured, and nobody ever questions what it is. Plus you can easily carry a variety of brands & flavors. 2 mylifeinpink and JD7176 reacted to this
