What is ketosis?

A simple description...Ketosis is when you have elevated ketones in your blood. You create ketones when your body burns fats for energy (instead of carbohydrates). You can measure ketones in your urine.

My surgeon has his patients do Atkins induction for 2-3 weeks prior to surgery - we didn't have to have shakes unless we wanted to. I lived on grilled chicken, turkey, tuna fish, small caesar salads, steak, and cheese here and there - dropped 14 lbs in a week and a half and I guess my liver was lean and mean when they got in there.

Every doc is different - but if you can start to drop those carbs to 20 or less - it is pretty much what you will be doing once you start eating again. I am also one that does not care much for sweet tasting things.

Ketones from the burning of fat is actually one of the body's preferred and most efficient fuels - it is remarkable how much better you feel, and look. Just make sure to get your fluids and Vitamins in. I still have a few Premier Protein shakes a week - I look at it as a supplement/medicine with a 30 gram wallop of Protein :)

I really wish I could have done Adkins. I would have been great at it, and I would not have felt so weak! 40 HOURS to go!!!!

I would suggest calling the nutritionist or person that handles your pre-op diet. Sometimes substitutions are fine, but they're really the only ones who can OK it.

You can eat lots of savory Soups. Just add a scoop of unflavored protien. At about seven days out I puréed lentil Soup. Thinned it. It was exactly the opposite if sweet!

I am still preop and also dreading my two week preop diet. With my doctor we are allowed 4 Bari-Essentials shakes a day if mixed with skim milk or 5 Bari-Essential shakes if mixed with Water and sugarfree Jello or sugarfree popscicles. Of course we are also to drink plenty of Water but can add crystal light if we choose. Oh yea' date=' unsweet coffee and tea are also an option. One more thing, we can have a cup of Swanson's low sodium chicken broth each day to break up the sweetness of everything else we can eat. Looking forward to the procedure but still dreading it too![/quote']

That was the same exact pre op diet I was on. You aren't a patient of Dr. Kim by any chance? Also, I'm 7 weeks post op and I strongly recommend you follow the pre op diet. I know it's tough at times, but there's a good reason for it and it will help not only your surgery, but your recovery go much easier.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
