Only 1 Day Of Liquid Diet?

Recommended Posts

The pre-surgery diet from my doc (Dr. Lavin) says I need only do a liquid diet the day before surgery. Is this because my BMI is relatively low (39ish)?

No, I don't think so. I was a high BMI (48) and my doctor only had me do the liquid diet 48-hours before surgery. He said the whole 2-4 week liquid diet is just torture and so long as you can adhere to a high-protein/low carb diet and lose 10-15 pounds before surgery. Which I did.

I only have to do liquids one day before surgery, too. I've been on a low carb/low sugar/low sodium high Protein diet for 3 week and now have moved to two Protein Shakes a day with some lean meat and veggies for dinner. I am starving and I get one meal a day so I can't imagine full liquids! Thank goodness I have less than two weeks left.

I've been doing a major food funeral and need to stop.

Three days ago, before I "officially" started my pre-op diet, I went ahead and splurged one last time. Me, My husband and my daughter went to Outback Steakhouse and I went all out on my favorite food - A bloomin' onion (we all shared) Fettuccine Alfredo with chicken and Shrimp (I could only eat half before I was full) and even a "sample" size of the chocolate Thunder from Down Under which was actually more like a normal size portion instead of the shareable one. It was absolutely scrumptious and so worth it to me. Now I'm 100% sticking to my diet until surgery in two weeks. I think it's normal to have a little bit of mourning before surgery..food has been our friend and companion for many years and it's hard to imagine life without that crutch. Just try to remember how great you'll feel in a few weeks when the weight starts melting off! Make a commitment to stick to the plan from here on out, the more you get off before surgery the easier it will be afterward. Good luck!

It's possibly due to your BMI, but it really seems more to just vary from doctor to doctor preference. I have a BMI over 50 and my doctor did not require a pre-op liquid diet except for 1 day Clear Liquids.< /p>

My BMI is 42. I'm on a high Protein diet until the day before surgery. The day before, I have to be only on clear liquids. I have lost 10lbs in two weeks on the high Protein diet.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
