Super Nurses With Sleeves (Support Group)

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm a RN in Georgia. My surgery has been approved. I haven't scheduled my surgery yet but I'm scheduled for my upper GI on Nov 24th. I'm very excited and nervous about this journey and am glad for a forum such as this!

Hey everyone! My sister in law has been a huge support and led me to this app. She is not a bariatric patient but has jumped on board with finding any and every way to help me through my journey.

I've been in healthcare since my 18th birthday 8.5 years ago. I was a CNA the first 5 years and have been an RN for nearly 4 years. My sleeve surgery is Monday 11/30/15. I am so excited!

It is nice to have a place for nurses! I think we are a special breed, taking care of everyone else except ourselves.

I am an FNP and a Psych NP,working full time in psych, one day a month doing public health and one term per year of teaching nursing students (psych nursing).

I have just scheduled my surgery in Mexico in the first weekish in January. My insurance (which is good) won't cover my surgery because my BMI is too low and I don't have diabetes so I am paying out of pocket.

I'm POD2 came home thus afternoon. The NP and Surgeon both told me not to be a nurse and to call with questions or concerns lol. Benefit of having providers who I've been working with for well over a year.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
