Super Nurses With Sleeves (Support Group)

Recommended Posts

Hello my fellow nurses and future nurses. I'm 24 and I've been an RN for about a year and a half..and I love it! I'm in the process of getting sleeved soon..possibly late april.I have my psych evaluation for insurance approval on Tuesday this week. I'm getting very nervous..because ofcourse I find myself reading all about the complications forum. Anyone from the south texas area? I hope I won't regret this life changing decision..

Hey I was sleeved on march 20; doing great; just hang in there it will come very quick; I live in Corpus Christi

Do any of my fellow nurses just want to have all our overweight patients know about the sleeve and how it can help them? Boy is it tough not to share. Linda

Hi my name is Larry and I'm a Registered Nurse in dialysis for the las 15 years. I'm actually having my surgery tomorrow at 7:30am. I was actually convinced to do the procedure after several of my patients had bypass to get on the transplant list. This will be my first hospitalization and surgery ever, no I'm a little nervous hut ready at the same time. My surgeon bases on my BMI on requires me to be NPO after midnight and hopefully just an overnight stay in the hospital. My pre-op consisted of upper GI, abdominal US, echocardiogram, EKG, CXR and about 11 tubes of blood. He said everything looked great so that's good. I will keep you posted.

I want to tell complete strangers that I see out in public about it. I am only 19 days post op so I will probably wait a little longer before I start talking about it.

How long was your hospital stay?

I had mine done in Mexico because my bmi wasn't high enough for insurance to pay. I had the surgery on a Wednesday night and left the hospital Friday at 1 pm in the afternoon. I then stayed in a hotel Friday night and flew home on Saturday. I was worried about post surgical complications since my Dr was located in Mexico. So far my only complication is a hematoma where the largest incision was.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
