Tip from Dr. Phil

Recommended Posts

I was just watching Dr. Phil, and I know it's a repeat, but first time I saw this episode. There was a woman on who lost 140lbs through gastric bypass, and went from a size 24 to a 4. One side effect of her weight loss was that her husband gained 75 lbs! He would eat everything she left on her plate in addition to his meal. I could easily see my DH falling into this pattern. Has anyone here run into this? My DH would love to lose about 40 lbs so I'm hoping some of my new eating habits will rub off on him, but not in a bad way!

My husband is excited about us sharing meals when we eat out. Plus I'm making better choices shopping and cooking for the entire family. I warned 'em all, I'm no short order cook. Ya get what'cha get! And it's gonna be fat free and baked!

Ha Ha. My husband ate my leftovers before I started this journey and that has had me concerned that he will put on weight as well.

So, I have gotten him to agree to many guidelines that he will share with me.

So far, He has agreed to share meals with me. If the meal isn't quite big enough, we have also agreed to order a vegetable side item. I have also gotten him to agree to forgo bread and chips with me. He hasn't agreed to forgo sodas yet, but he has verbally agreed to cut down.

Oh, and my husband is the type that if you blink an eye, his food is disappears and you have no idea where it went. Before banding, his bites were 4 times as large as mine and I hardly ever saw him chew. So, as you can imagine his bites are now the size of my entire meal! He is working on taking as long as I do eat my meal. He is also practacing putting his fork down between bites. And to his dismay, I am trying to get him in the habit of reducing his bite size.

As you can see, I have my work cut out for me, however I am fortunate that he is willing to work with me and be supportive. Good Luck!

Oh my godness that is so true.....the last time I went to my dieticians office (4 weeks ago) I had "oficially" lost 25lbs ....my husband hopped on the scale and he had gained 8lbs!

The dietician warned him that it is very common for the partner to finish of the bandster's leftovers and that many partners gain a significant amount of weight.....luckily he exercises alot...although by the looks of it the exercisae aint workin! ;)

The band is helping both of us. Since I've had surgery he's number one jealous and he's never been overweight but we also order one meal and I'll eat about 1/4 and he eats the rest where before he would have eat it all. So we both win.

My DH is losing along with me. He's lost 36 pounds so far. He said watching the way I eat helps him do the same. We used to each eat a T-bone steak now we only eat one. He saves the most tender piece for me and he eats the rest. Same with other foods. Also, since I can't eat bread...he switched to wheat products if he wants bread. Snacks are healthier choices as well. It's really worked out...no gaining for him ;)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
