Hi all.

Well, I had my op on Thursday so am now 2 days post-op! Feeling so delicate and tired and sick! I know it will get better but can anyone tell me how their first week or so went cos right now I'd rather have my old stomach back!! I'm getting quite a bit of Fluid in which is ok but just can't seem to shake the headache!

Any advise out there at all??

Nicky

The first week is no picnic. sleep as much as you can. Drink and walk when you're not sleeping. It will get much better very soon. By day 5 or 6 I started to feel human again. By the end of the second week I felt like superman. You will start improving by leaps and bounds very soon.

What, if anything are you eating? I was allowed grits on my full liquid stage. I had one bowl a day and it was for sure the high point of my day.

Hi

I actually cried about my old stomach...

The headache is from not eating and then maybe not enough fluids.I had it too for about 10 days on and off.At the moment you are delicate and it is a big op so you will feel tired and sick,I certainly did.

You will start feeling better soon.Just rest, sip and breathe. And dont worry about anything else.It takes a while to start feeling that everything will be ok,but it will.I sometimes read of people driving the next day and going to work in a week and I have no idea how they do that.

Just try to relax and its baby steps at this point.

Good luck and speedy recovery for you!

I agree with Butter the Bean lol...everyday gets better and better. I sometimes feel as though I miss my stomach because you will never be able to eat like you used to but now that I am 3 months out I feel totally amazing! Stay motivated and it will definitely get better!

2nd day post-op was my worst day. I was nauseated the entire day. I slept, I sipped decaff peppermint tea, Water hurt, and I walked and sat in the bathroom and sometimes fell asleep there. I had an allergic reaction to the gastrique for the upper gi leak test.

I slept whenever anyone showed up to see me and was awake and nauseated when I was by myself. I was in the hospital 5 days and when I got home I had a drain until day 9. I made sure every day I got up and walked circles in my house living room, dining room, kitchen, and I would try to get 20 minutes in. Then I would sip, sleep, sip, walk, sip. It was my way of life for the first 10 days.

Try to stay positive, even though you are feeling icky and know that every single day is better than the day before. I had a lot of complications with my surgery, and I have a brain tumor and I have lupus and I'm not young, but at 8 weeks I feel better than I have in years. It does get better every day, hold on tight to that thought, and congrats on the sleeve.

I hope you feel better soon.

What you have to realize is that you have had major surgery, even though you have no big incision. As other have said the first couple weeks you may feel you got hit by a train. Once you go thru all the steps and get to solid food that will be the amazing time. Your sleeve will tell you in no uncertain terms when to stop and believe me it will be only after a couple bites. This is the time you have to be careful and use that space wisely. I am 10 mos. out and am down over 80#. Going on a cruise in Jan. and I cannot tell you how much fun to get clothes and look so good. The other thing is the energy level. You always heard people who have lost say they now have so much ebergy...WOW. My husband is on the phone telling family that he has no idea what I may have accomplished by the time he gets home. I am 66 and my only regret is that I could have had this sooner, but I am truly enjoying and have nver regretted this decision(maybe early on I got teary eyed when I passed the Chinese buffett) The buffett is out but every once in a while I get an order of something and it lasts me 3 days. So just go day by day and soon all these little problems will resolve and you will literally be amazed...

Thanks all for your reassuring words! Today I have managed a 6 hr car journey and arrived at my aunts where I am staying for the next 3 weeks to get my strength back etc. I feel much better today and have been impressed with how much liquid I have been able to cope with-although feel very full up and sloshy about all the time!

It's great to hear others stories and also other people who feel a bit overwhelmed too! No doubt we will all reach our goals and look back on this difficult time and smile at how worth it this process really is! Fingers crossed hey!! Xxxx

The first two weeks were the worst for me. I was in pain and a big baby the whole time. But in three months it will feel like a bad dream and the results is so worth the pain.

Hang in there! I am on my fourth day post op (Surgery was the 26th at like 730am) and it is FINALLY starting to get a little better. I was in a lot of pain before, although each day it seems to get a little less. It has been helping me to get in walking throughout the day - I think it's breaking up some of the gas. I am still using my pain medications, but the majority of my pain right now is when I am transitioning from sitting to standing and then for about 5-10 minutes after starting to walk. Sometimes I will get gassy after eating/drinking, but I'm keeping gas-x strips by me and they are a lifesaver. I also am using a heating pad alternating on my shoulders/back when I'm sitting and I think that's helping with the gas too.

Give it a few more days and I think we'll both be feeling a lot better!

Hi Nicky-

I had my surgery one week before you and yes, yes, yes, that first 3 days was awful! I was in pain, couldn't sleep, every swallow felt like a golfball in my stomach it was really a miserable weekend. Sunday was my turning point, I finally felt a little more human was able to take a shower. Last week I recoop'd at home and made sure to walk each day. It does get easier!

Hang in there and happy recovery!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
