Pain on lower left side

Recommended Posts

I am afraid that my port may have shifted. It was always in the center of my waist. I now feel a hard "ball" off to the left side. It is very painful when I press on it. I also am getting pains about 2 inches lower and can hardly walk at times. Has anyone experienced anything like this before. I have an appointment with the doctor on the 28th but am wondering if I should go in sooner.

Carolc, how long ago were you banded? I had this kind of pain early on, a few weeks after surery. It was very painful for about 4 days, shooting pain at times. My doc said the nerve endings were raw and kinda exposed and unhappy (my words). I used a heating pad and it helped.

18 weeks postop, sometimes I get port pain when I ride my bike or bend over. And it hurts a few inches away from my port. Don't know why.

I have been banded since January 2004. In about March of this year I had the same type of pain but it went away after a day or so. This has gone on for over a week. It doesn't hurt when I am just sitting still but if I then try to move it is terrible.

Call in the AM and tell your MD you need to be seen ASAP. Don't wait.

carolc, you've had your band much longer than I have so you have more experience.

My pain was a few weeks after surgery so I don't know if if can be the same kind of thing a year later. If your band did shift, I think it probably would have made some nerve endings very unhappy. The pain made me double over. And then one day it was gone.

But based on your note "it doesn't hurt when I am just sitting still but if I then try to move it is terrible". That is what my "raw unhappy nerve" did. I was OK sitting but moving was like a lightening bolt thru my stomach.

I always error on being cautious, at least call your Doc. When I call mine, he says come in, no matter what. He's also very cautious and so far (except for the initial slipped band) I've never had a problem.

I have this same pain...i have had it for about a week now. I went into the ER last week because it was so bad..I thought something worse had happened. He told me it was normal and that I may have pulled a muscle near my port. But, I have been in intense pain for a week now. I have been taking Loritab and it still hurts like crazy. Like you, I am fine if I am sitting still or laying down, but as soon as I get up it makes me want to double over....the doc seems to think I will be fine and that this is normal.....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
