18 Days Post Op And I Just Want A Salad Haha

Recommended Posts

So it's been a while since I posted because... I ended up back in the hospital, unfortunately I wasnt able to have a bowel movement for 2 weeks and it ended up being obstructed. Not a fun process to fix btw. One thing I would recommend to anyone going to get the surgery is go have an enema before surgery. Would have proven very helpful for me. Anyway I'm back on my recovery path, having a very hard time with puréed foods and the five hours between meals.

A few questions:

Does everyone else have 5 hour period between meals, seems more for a person who wakes up at 8am, I get up at 10/11 cause I work late. I'm hungry! I'm eating dinner at 11pm - sad face. Waiting on dietician to call me back but I was curious what everyone else's dieticians say.

Anyone else having headaches? I'm sure it's the lack of carbs but it is annoying.

Has anyone consulted with a dietician that wasn't your doctors Bariatric dietician?

Anyone know why we are required to do sugar-free, other than the obvious? I prefer to eat very natural organic foods so these chemical products aren't fulfilling.

And last but not least what did everyone's

Dietician tell them their daily calorie intake should be?

Anyway 18 days post op and I've lost 28.2 pounds!! So excited.

Sweet dreams all.

N

Xoxo

It took me 2 1/2 monts until I could handle salad-- it hurt my belly earlier than that-- I was on a lot of yogurt, Soups, tuna, eggs at 18 days out.. They told me 700- 800 calories ... which some days I am over some under.. I have re-introduced shakes because I don't feel I am getting enough protein.. LOVE bean or pea Soup though!

This is the first I've heard of having to wait 5 hours in between eating. Especially this early after surgery. You're still healing and can't take in very much at one time. I was told that for while being on the liquid and pureed diets not to worry about how often I ate ... as long as I was eating only when I was hungry. I'm 16 days out and normally I have 3 meals and 3-4 Snacks throughout the day, along with Water, water, water.

Yes that five hour window does seem extreme, it doesn't teach you to respect your new relationship with your belly- you should definitely learn to tell when you're hungry or not by your belly, not your watch! Also 800-1200 cals is how much a person on life support gets to maintain healthy organs- yes the surgery is there to reduce cal intake to lose weight but too long on too little calories will damage your system and lead to stalling if your body goes into starvation mode... If you want to stay under 800 cals this early on fine, but exercise your muscles, keep up Protein and watch out for too much fatigue or headaches and see GP/surgeon if they persist!!! Good luck !!!!

Oh and always seek a second opinion, I've seen great dieticians and horrible ones! You should be able to discuss organic options with a decent dietician as well as psychological problems about food! They are not nutritionist, they focus on healthy lifestyles! Make sure you're comfortable with your dietician because they should be able to help you transition throughout the whole journey :)

5 hours is too long at this stage. You need Snacks in between. I'm over 2 months out and 5 hours is long, Id try eating a snack in between.

5 small meals is great :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
