Sleevealicious 43 Posted July 27, 2012 Hey everyone, I am 4 days into my two week Optifast diet an have been told twice today that I have bad breath even though I just brushed my teeth. I know ketosis can cause this , but my question is when does it stop ? The idea is to be in ketosis for most of the weight loss phase, right ? So does that mean as long as I am eating low carb I will have an offensive odor coming from my mouth? I have tried mouth wash, gum, brushing teeth and mints . They briefly and barely help. Any tips or hope on when this will stop would be so greatly appreciated! I know it's a small price to pay to be healthy , but yuck !
PdxMan 4,292 Posted July 27, 2012 You are in this serious ketosis until you get your carbs & calories back up. To what levels ... that is individual, for sure. There are a lot of pros and cons about ketosis and whether it is actually a good thing. You can still lose weight without being in the mouth-tastes-like-a-cats-behind mode. Not as fast, but there is also a school of thought that prolonged ketosis can cause liver/kidney damage, so ... I would rather have slow weight loss and not be on dialysis (sp?), but we all have our own goals and decisions, for sure. 3 Sleevealicious, MinaT and lessofmeismore reacted to this
Sleevealicious 43 Posted July 27, 2012 Yikes! Thanks for the info... Definitely don't want to do kidney damage or be living with this terrible breath for the next year or so. I don't really have a choice of what to eat now since the Optifast plan is really strict , but I will definitely be sure to add some carbs in once I am able to after surgery. I appreciate your help!
