I just registered and the auto-message suggested I post here first.

Basically, I am 3 days post-op. I refused WLS for a long time and when I finally decided to do it, VSG was my only option because everyone I know with the band has failed and everyone I know who had bypass is either nearly bald or has an eating disorder (my spouse included). I felt that VSG was a way that I can lose weight while maintaining a certain nutrition level to be healthy.

Anyway, on May 9th I had my first consultation. I wasn't hopeful because I don't have the typical story that many obese people have. I am a runner. Up until the day before surgery I was still running. I don't have any co-morbidities. I'm just obese because I have a hard time backing away from the food. I told my doctor that if it weren't for running, I'd be way worse off weight-wise.

I am fortunate to have insurance that doesn't need a bunch of hoop-jumping. I had my nutrition consult (1), psychological exam (1) and history of the diets I've been on for the last 5 years. My doctor required a sleep study but that's a long, weird story that you can inbox me about if you care.

Anyway, by the end of June, my insurance approved me and three days later, the surgeon's scheduler called asking if I wanted to have surgery the next week. Of course, I was totally unprepared for that so I declined and took the 23rd of July (3 days ago).

I'm really glad that part went rather seamlessly. I returned home from the hospital yesterday and for now I'm just trying to heal and get used to this new experience.

I hope to glean helpful information from you all and maybe I can be of some assistance at some point to the members here.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
