When something gets stuck, exactly where is it stuck?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've been wondering lately, when food gets stuck, exactly where is it? Because I've been thinking that food is supposed to kind of sit in the small pouch and then slowly drip through the hole (stoma) into the big stomach, right? So when it's stuck, is it in the esophogus? Or is it stuck in the hole? Is it stuck in the pouch? Because some food is supposed to be in the pouch for awhile anyway, right? Anyone know?

It's stuck between the pouch and the lower stomach in what's called the stoma (i.e. "the hole" you refer to). It's rare to get really stuck. Some people use the term to refer to being too full as well, which isn't as painful as being truly stuck, but is uncomfortable. Either (food in stoma/too much in pouch) can cause a PB.

I agree with Julie. I think it's unusual to actually get "stuck" (like a cork in a bottle), but food bits that are a little too big can be painful going thru the stoma. The Mexican chip things feel like ground glass going down to me, so I don't eat them.

My DH got truly stuck on a blueberry - just the right size and shape to jam the little hole. It took hours for it to go thru, or come back up - I don't remember which route it finally took.

Sometimes it can get stuck on the other end, too. Hence my adapation to "PBM". :o

Since my second fill last week I have the almost painful sensation of feeling every bite of food as it passes down. I had the sensation with my first but not quite as strongly as now.

So it's not like feeling stuck. I don't have slimes, pb's or vomiting. I just feel the food.< /p>

Weird huh.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
